I think I'm overweight

I finally got around to having my trailer and truck weighed. I don't think I pulled on the scale right (there was nobody to explain it) but these are the numbers. My guess is that's it's also not balanced right. Please give me your thoughts.

Steer Axle: 2400
Drive Axle: 5480
Trailer Axle: 3700
Total: 11580

Car inside weighs about 2900.

That said, the truck did pretty nice pulling it up and down RT29 to VIR through the big hills in Nelson County Virginia. Had to drop it to 3rd a couple of times but it did OK.

According to Toyota the GCWR is 11,100 pounds so you're a couple of fat guys worth of overloaded. Your truck is supporting 7880 pounds of the total weight which is 50% more than the 5500 pounds it's rated for.

What stands out to me is your drive axle weight. In short your numbers also don't quite add up. With a weight distributing hitch in your picture and for your truck to sit reasonably level your front axle weight should be close to 4000 pounds.

 

I agree the numbers don't make sense. I wonder if I pulled onto the scales correctly. How much does a short bed double cab weigh? I'm about 200# and probably didn't have more than 100# of gear in the truck.

Much does the trailer weigh empty? The car and the truck are about 7300. You and your stuff weigh about? I doubt the trailer weighs 4000...but who knows.

That's part of my problem. I don't know. The guy I bought it from said it was about 2400#. All I have in there is a set of wheels/tires ~200# and maybe 200# of tools and miscellaneous junk.

 

I'm not an expert on towing, but I have done some. I would not tow that with tacoma. Your right at max

 

Weigh on a CAT scale? Separate platforms for each set of axles...

I guess so, but I told the guy I had never done it before and he just said drive on. That front axle number makes no sense, it seems like it would be porpoising all the way down the road. It wasn't. It was obviously heavier than my open car set up (see avatar) but not "bad".

 

04 f250 diesel 4x4. I didn't even know it was back there. Trailer car and gear 8500 9000lbs. 75 MPH no problem.

I think a 2nd gen weighs about 4300 pounds - usually that weight is without gas, floor mats, etc. So I'd figure you, your truck + stuff is probably around 4800 pounds. I'd guess your trailer is in the mid to upper 2000's. The front slopes which helps a lot with drag at highway speeds. Since you're so close to the limit and your numbers seem weird it may be worth a re-weigh and/or carry less stuff.
