I'd think probably not unless you were asked for it by the police/court and didn't turn it over. Disclosing the dash cam to the person attempting to commit fraud just means they run away and not get caught. Were that to happen to me, I'd say nothing to the fraudster and insist on the police coming to the scene. Once there, during the interview, I'd disclose the dashcam to the police and show the footage.

    Nope....

Now it may be illegal to record others without consent in some States so you need to check with local laws.....

I have a dash cam in my Taco but in Va it is illegal to mount on windshield....

I guess its a very gray area as it does not block my view in anyway....

    § 46.2-1054
Suspension of objects or alteration of vehicle so as to obstruct driver’s view
It shall be unlawful for any person to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in the Commonwealth with any object or objects, other than a rear view mirror, sun visor, or other equipment of the motor vehicle approved by the Superintendent, suspended from any part of the motor vehicle in such a manner as to obstruct the driver’s clear view of the highway through the windshield, the front side windows, or the rear window, or to alter a passenger-carrying vehicle in such a manner as to obstruct the driver’s view through the windshield. However, this section shall not apply (i) when the driver’s clear view of the highway through the rear window is obstructed if such motor vehicle is equipped with a mirror on each side, so located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway for at least 200 feet to the rear of such vehicle, (ii) to safety devices installed on the windshields of vehiclesowned by private waste haulers or local governments and used to transport solid waste, or (iii) to bicycle racks installed on the front of any bus operated by any city, county, transit authority, or transit or transportation district.

That would only apply to a passenger in your vehicle as far as the dash cam is concerned. Voyer laws though...

I keep the audio off on my dash cam merely because it would fill the memory card with loud music and intermittent shouts along these lines:
"Get off the fucking phone you retard!"
"Stop texting and look the fuck up, douchenozzle!"
    "Fucking moron."
    "Jesus Christ, today people."
"Can we attempt to do the speed limit today?"
"Is that a cop? That looks like a cop. Nope, light bar on a Ford Explorer. Who does that?"
    "Oh, that was genius. Asshat."
"Whoa, it's King Bro, escaped from Brovakia. Nice body lift."
"Let's make some forward progress, shall we?"
    "What the fuck is that?"
"Ever heard of turn signals bitch? Oh, you're a beemer, so you haven't."
"Holy shit, the cops are driving Ford Explorers!"
"How is that even street legal?"

I need to just pull my memory card sometime and make a "greatest hits" of some of the shit rolling around down here.

Its total bullshit. If the cops wanted to be total dicks you could get a citation for it but it is a very gray area so I think we will be fine....

Yes, it's a good idea to know whether you're in a single-party consent state or not w.r.t. audio recordings. Still, with a dash cam hanging on the windshield with an LED lit, it would be difficult for a passenger to claim they didn't realize they were being recorded. It's not exactly hidden.

As for the camera capturing audio from outside the car -- I think you'd have a similar argument that it's hanging there in plain view, plus there's not typically any reasonable expectation of privacy standing outside on a public roadway.

On both of my vehicles, from my point of view the dash cam is located behind the rear view mirror and not blocking any visibility out the windshield. Though I also don't live in VA so no matter. :)

GA seems to be illegal as well but again it seems to be a very gray area when mounting

In the following image, the states with red prohibit windshield mounts, states with green allow windshield mounts, and those in yellow let you put your dashcam on the windshield with a few exceptions. Here is a comprehensive guide that helps you see for yourself if your state allows windshield mounts: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34521.

When is VA going to repeal the law against Radar Detectors? There has been some talk in Richmond about allowing them in private vehicles and only prohibiting them on commercial vehicles like heavy trucks.

The specific GA law reads as: "(a) No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any sign, poster, or other nontransparent material upon the front windshield, side windows, or rear windows of such vehicle which obstructs the driver's clear view of the highway or any intersecting highway."

IMHO nothing to worry about unless you've been pretty dumb in your placement of your dashcam. Any LEO pulling you over for violating OCGA §40-8-73 has another reason he or she wants to have a chat with you. e.g. http://www.cbs46.com/story/36280286/traffic-stop-leads-to-drug-bust-in-cobb-county

Two very different countermeasures used for two different threats. There are several different "stealth" radar detectors, and you can achieve some creative mounts with built-in units like the Sti-R... too bad that unit is *awful* with blind-spot-monitors though. Sold mine when I switched funcars.

sounds like my stepdaughter...instead of telling us of problems with her car, she lets them go for weeks till it quits running. one instance her dome lights wouldnt turn off so instead of telling us she duct tapes the light so she can drive at night...nevermind the light is constantly running the battery dead. She finally told us after her dash looked like a christmas tree. I had to pull the fuse for the dome lights until i figured out that its probably one of the door switch lights. but for now I just have the fuse pulled.

Speaking of mental midgetry - my inlaw smokes and does nothing but complain about how bad the air is. She also is so afraid of airplanes she get nervous when someone asks her to drop/pick up from the airport. As for getting into an airplane, that will never happen. But she will spend literally days driving cross country because that's "safer"
