If it makes you feel at least a little better, technically this is powertrain related so you should be covered until 60k miles. Number of years shouldn't matter for you since it looks like you drive quite a bit.

Unless of course you've put 60k miles on the truck in a year, in which case you've reached a whole new level of driving.

Even though I couldn't put up with the noise anymore and I jumped ship, I do believe them when they say it won't be causing any major failure. I too have had a diff fail (pinion bearing for me) and boy did that get really bad quickly. It started off as a howl similar to this but that symptom became the least of my worries in about all of a couple hundred miles.

Thanks and I'm hoping the noise is just a noise and not masking something worse. :)

#lemonlaw! Bringing it back to the dealer Tomorrow! I will keep bringing it in till it's repaired. My time has already been wasted so far . what's several dozen hours a week more wasted at a Toyota service center!

My howling was atrociously loud the last two days. It's been raining and I have a bit of weight in the bed but otherwise nothing's changed.

Got mine at Tuscaloosa Toyota. Got my fingers crossed that dampers will quiet the noise.

Tried shifting into neutral while the howl was going. It went quiet immediately then shifting back into gear it came back immediately. I kept my foot as still as I could to keep the rpms more or less the same.

So who ever said they got the howl in neutral... I apparently do not.

    Called the 1-800 #

Ha ! That was fun . A huge waste of 1hr56mins. They asked me everything I told the crap dealer I took it to and he responded by recommending the Toyota dealer in my area to look at it.
Hey binky...they did . They did nothing. They told me that was normal and that's why I called the 1-800 Toyota number!

You should consider getting rid of the truck, I took a very limited loss on mine and I've not regretted it once.

Not exactly, but once corporate contacts your dealer and tells them to make it right, they will step it up a notch. Otherwise they just play their games with you

Sort of. They'll step back in if the dealer doesn't play nice in the sandbox. This puts pressure on the dealer to come to a satisfactory conclusion.

Just stay level headed and businesslike. As long as you aren't being emotional or irrational corporate should be willing to smack a bad dealership around a bit.

With that said, there isn't a fix. So I'm not sure you'll be satisfied no matter what they do. I'm not.

I didn't even bring up the howling at my 5k because it hasn't gotten worse, isn't that bothersome for me and I know there isn't a fix so no point in wasting anyones time yet

The problem is no one is complaining! This is a new vehicle. It should be brought to the attention of every dealer. People that don't want to bring it in are also the problem. The more people doing this will force Toyota into a fix. I'm sorry that noise is not normal! Also when the warranty expires and the part fails a day,1month,1 year later , what can you do then? Pay for a part that should of been fixed during warranty. The reason I buy new cars every time is so I don't need to worry about a break down. This is more than a noise. It's a failure waiting to happen.

Would this differential be covered under lifetime powertrain? I've read through the lifetime powertrain info a few times and I could never find that info. When I bought the truck, I asked the salesman and he said he thought it would be and he would check, but I forgot to ask him again, and he forgot to tell me.
