So, yesterday I come out of the house, and my truck had rolled back into the street...

My driveway is a slight incline, not severe, but enough that the truck will immediately roll back with the clutch depressed and no parking brake. I set the parking brake probably 95%+ of the time, but yesterday I was grabbing some things to carry when I got out and likely forgot to set it. When I got in to put it back into the driveway, I don't think it was in gear. I usually pull into the driveway in 2nd and leave it parked in that gear. My wife had gotten home shortly before I went out and found the truck in the street, and she says it was parked like normal. One other unusual thing was that it had to crank a fair amount before it started.

Is there a characteristic of this engine that it would not have enough compression to hold it? My theory is that it started to roll back against the engine compression and then popped out of gear. The truck has about 8300 miles on it.

Any thoughts???

 

Why would you not put in 1st gear?

 

I never do. For most of the low speed parking stuff I can use 2nd and I just leave it there.

It's possible that I either bumped the shifter or did something to make it not be fully engaged in gear, making it easier to pop out, but the fact that it was hard to start makes me wonder what exactly happened.

 

Well it's better to be safe than sorry. I always leave mine in 1st gear unless I'm absolutely sure it won't roll on flat ground and even then I usually chock the wheels with a rock or something big enough. Also I'm not really sure how the shifter would pop out of gear on its own unless it was not in gear completely or like you said, you bumped it.

 

I usually set the E-brake, but like I said, I was in a hurry and forgot to. The odd thing is the truck sat there for probably close to an hour or better before it moved.

 

I always use the handbrake and usually also leave it in 1st or 2nd gear.

 

If I'm on a steep incline facing forwards I'll leave it in reverse. Otherwise I'll park it in first.

 

Last week the dealer replaced my clutch, tension/spring and assembly because it was creaking pretty bad.

I'm taking it back in tomorrow because I have to press on the clutch really hard to get the engine started. I don't know what type of sensor they put in there, maybe a switch that makes contacts/completes a circuit when the clutch is pressed?? Well, I have to press hard and then try turning the key to turn the engine now. For now i've been using the clutch cancel not to press it so hard.

 

It's probably some super simple adjustment, so hopefully it's a painless process.

 

1st gear is the lowest gear and offers the most engine braking effect.

 

Maybe, but on a steep incline facing forwards, the wheels will want to turn forwards and theoretically if it's steep enough, the weight of the truck can overcome the resistance of the engine and it can just roll away attempting to start.

In reverse, it'll counteract that and should stay put. (at least that's how it works in my mind, not sure if that's totally true)

 

Floor mat shifting to get in the way of depressing the clutch fully to trip the switch?

 

It was an easy fix. Took about 20 minutes. I have molded floor mats from Husky so that's definitely not in the way.

I have a compustar remote start system thats tucked behind the lower console above the clutch and I also have a "power magic" box for my dash cam. The power magic box is about 2"x1"x1" box with two wires coming from. The adhesive gave so it was dangling on the side cover of the foot rest.
While I was waiting I sat in a chair close to the service advisors desk. The tech who originally installed my clutch was called in and I overheard the advisor talking to the tech on needing to adjust the clutch. The tech immediately says he doesn't want to mess with it because I have "wires and things hanging all over the place". The advisor says he doesn't care and that it has nothing to do with the clutch and that it wasn't in his way before and it's not in his way now. The tech complained about a couple more things that had nothing do with the clutch but my advisor gave zero fucks and it was done in about 20 minutes.

Prior to bringing it in, I did tell the advisor about the box and if it was going to get in the way that I can remove it before hand. He looked at it and said it was no problem. Not sure why the tech would have an attitude about it.

 

Anyone know the gear ratios off the top of their head? I'm wondering what gear is 1:1. Feels like it's 4th and then 5th is o.d. and 6th is just a bit more o.d.

I've had mine parked on a slight incline, no parking brake, in 1st gear. At a job site just handling phone calls and such and as im leaning on the truck every once and awhile I notice a weird feeling as if the truck is moving. I dismiss it thinking it's impossible but after awhile I caught it and saw the tires move ever so slightly! I've used the parking brake ever since. On my last truck you could just leave it in 1st and not worry about the parking brake. For some reason this truck will slowly creep down an incline if left in gear.

 

Have you not seen Risky Business? ALWAYS set the E-brake.

 

You should never put it into reverse if it's a forward incline and vice versa. If the motor turns backwards from you rolling forward in reverse it could loosen the timing chain or belt and potentially cause damage.
