Powdercoat Black Rims Chipping

hey guys ive been looking into painting my stock rims black and i figured i would go powdercoat since my dad can get good rates from getting it done at work.

how much did it cost you ?

i know alot of you have had it done and i was looking for some feedback on how they have lasted over time.

i would be going with a semi gloss finish.

Powder coating my badges would be fine also right?

You would have to ask the guy doing the work out the badges- Powdercoat goes into a 400 or so degree oven- IDK how the plastic badges would do with that.

I painted mine- and they have held up just fine- Almost 2 years and I have only had to touch them up once after a particularly brutal wheeling trip...

 

op, cant powdercoat plastic. like Brunes said, parts have to go into the oven to bake. would melt the plasic. local powdercoater around here charges $70 a wheel. you will have to rattle can your center caps to match. hope this helps

 

I painted mine too, and have only touched up after a wheeling trip also, and when I got new tires and the guys took off my weights and put new ones in a different location . I personally enjoyed doing the painting.

 

i should of made this a poll. so painting holds up pretty good? and thats nice you can always touch it up...

my dad can prob get it powdercoated cheap so that was the way i was looking anybody else?

i just want it to hold up for a while and look like it was done right

and ok i didnt even think abt the oven with the badges thats a no go ill just paint em.

 

My painted ones have held up just fine. No complaints. FYI, if you do decide to paint flat black shows imperfections less than a gloss or semi gloss. For me the wheels were my first major painting and it turned out so good some people asked if it was professionally done.

 

I enjoy the painting as well. Plus it gives me the option to change them down the road.

As far as the wheel weights- You can get them to "static balance" them-using lip clip weights inside the rim only. Or you can use EQUAL. Or stick on weights. Lots of options.

I get my tires static balanced.

ok so painting sounds like the way i should go...
are there any good write ups on the best way to paint, and type of paint to use?

if you guys have painted rims id love to look at some pictures, same with powdercoated rims just so i can get a comparison thanks guys

 

I painted mine and love them. I Andes them down with a fine wheel brush that you put on your electric screwdriver. Then paint adhesive, folowed by dupli primer and then painted with dupli flat black. Turned out looking like I powder coated them and only cost mr about 50 bucks for everything.

 

that sounds like they didnt prime it first. i powdered mine last summer, and today they look like the day i did them, when they're actually clean, havent faded or cracked at all

 

What do you guys think about using bedliner? has this been done before?..
edit: after looking around i see this is a bad idea

how long did it take you guys to paint your rims you have to take them off the truck right? and did you only paint the one side or both?

 

I powdercoated mine as well. To correct everyone you can powdercoat the centercaps. I have done 2 sets of centercaps and they both turned out great. Its a tricky process but can be done. you must first heat the center caps at 225 for about 8 mins. pull em out spray your powder on them, bump the heat up to 250, and keep a careful eye on them. leave them in no longer than 8 mins. I pulled mine at 6, let them cool for a min, hit em with a then layer of powder and put them back in for 6-8 mins. The emblems i imagine you could do the same way but they are made from a different plastic than the centercaps and I havent trid them yet

I assume you guys are leaving the tires on them as you paint them? How did it turn out? Any close up pics?

 

how long did it take to dry completely? can i do this in a day or should i plan for them to dry overnight?
i think id want to do both sides just to make it more complete, i dont want a chick to notice or something hah.

 

I left mine to dry over night. I used a deck of cards around the rim so I wouldn't get pain on the tire. It took me a total of 3 days I think. It turned out clean!!

 

ok and me being unfamiliar with working on cars what did you do with the truck? did you put it on blocks?

i dont even know how to take off the wheels... im gonna get a bud to help but i dont want to sound like a complete dumbass

 

Mine are painted as well and I've only touched up once and that was after crawling through a couple nasty rock pits... The chipping was minimal!
