Just got a new 2017 tacoma 4x4 and was wondering what is an ideal lift and tire size? I dont want anything too big and high. I was looking at a 3in lift and 33in tires (which is ideal and perfect for me) but a worker at 4 wheel parts told me that it'll scrape in the front. Ill be doing daily drives and off roads to my fishing spots in hawaii. So a bit of sand a rocks. any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

285s or 33s will rub unless you are prepared to trim and chop cab mounts. See my sig block for links to a lift write up and answers on tire size

Ive even had some minor rubbing at times when off road with 265/70r17 KO2's. CMC is next on the to do list.

I'm very happy with the performance so far. I definitely recommend getting the c load instead of e. I took a minor but noticeable hit to mpg, but the gains off road have been worth it.

E is overkill heavy and will ride stiff but some guys still run them. I recommend C. D is not too common.

3 different loads if I'm not mistaken..... But each load rating isn't available in all the sizes. I'm pretty sure they make a non-LT ko2, which I would actually suggest if you're not going to be doing much off road driving or if you plan on taking it pretty easy, gravel roads etc.... I know they make my size in LT C load and LT E load. C load is heavier than the non-LT version, but not as heavy as the E load. I would only get E load tires if you plan in doing some serious rock crawling and plan on regearing the truck. C load has kept my ride nice, not too still on road at all, and still let's me air down to ~20psi easily. I haven't had them long, but I'm impressed so far. My next set will be something different tho, so I can see if the BFG's are worth the extra $$$.

I dunno where you fish but I get through some pretty tough trails with 265 70 17 and stock height.

I'll be upgrading to 2 inch lift and 33s soon but that's cause I'm looking to get into more demanding trails.

Regardless 285 won't fit without a CMC and 255 seem like it only works with stock off road wheels and suspension. Anything else variables change and there's no definitive yes or no answer

I'm on stock suspension too. A lift is in my future as well but I'm sticking with 265/70r17 because it let's me keep the weight down, the gearing closer to what it should be, and I've found it to be more than adequate for what I want to do with my truck. I've gotten plenty gnarly on this setup, once I have a lift/sliders/skids the truck will be capable of much more than I'm ready to throw at it. If I ever want something with bigger tires it'll have 2 axles, a shorter wheelbase, and a beat up body I won't mind bumping into rocks with.

Really is 1 or 2 inch of tire going to be a make or break situation for offroading? Think about it. 95% of what a guy can run with 285s can be run with 265/70. Get some sliders and decent skids if you're going over tough obstacles. Not going to be a deal Killer. By FAR MOST people running 33s or 285s are doing it all for looks.

Even tho I'm not going that route, it does look excellent in my opinion. Maybe @mesojdm has a new photo that will show what I'm talking about. His rig is a prime example example, but I'm biased due to it being a QS..... But he's on like 35's too, which also helps.

I was deadset on 33"s initially, but I elected to put on 265/70/17 tires. With an aggressive enough sidewall tread, the overall look appears much larger than 32". In my opinion, the Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs are a stellar choice, and reasonably priced to boot.
