Not to thread-jack, but what you describe reminds me of an app suite I've started to use extensively. They're all free and provided by REI. The two that I use are called HikingProject and PowderProject, but they've got others too: MountainProject (climbing), MTBProject (biking), TrailRunProject (guess what?). Similar to what you describe, you download the maps and info for the states you want (I've got everything saved for CO) then when you're in the backcountry or whatever, you can always get your GPS dot overlaid over the previously saved maps. What really sets it apart from Google Maps is the data in addition to the maps you download. Depending on your activity, they've got quite a plethora of routes and info. Definitely doesn't replace Google Maps because they don't have driving info, but I think they compliment each other nicely for outdoor trips.

Oddly enough I NEVER use the nav around town but it is GREAT for showing all of the forest roads here in AZ. This comes in handy during hunting season.

The navigation system is a bit behind, but I do like the trace function on it and it never made me become lost. Toyota knows that if people want something better they will have replaced.

I was here two weeks ago. That is a really nice area and I thought it would not be on the GPS map. I made a route (Lake Conasuga too/through Big Frog Wilderness) in my Gaia app and did not have the whole loop of BFW.

The trouble with "just replace it" is that there are functions that are built into the head unit that control certain aspects of the truck. Things like what happens when you push the button on the fob to lock/unlock the doors, headlight auto-on sensitivity, stuff like that. AFAIK, there is no way to change those options after replacing the head unit.

There is a feature to do this, tried it out in Ouachita National Forest a few weeks ago. Stayed on dirt roads so I'm not sure if the crumbs are pinned to the road though.

The NAV Toyota uses is complete crap. Google Maps is leaps and bounds above Toyota's in house system. Ask me how I know... *looks down at Toyota shirt*

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.
How does it work? I would love to have that when we find great trails ... and then can't relocate!

The GF has a new Civic and it has the OK Google feature and anything on her phone displays on the screen. The nav int eh truck sucks compared to apps I have used on my phone. We need to get Toyota on iCar which I have used in some GM vehicles!

dunno, my '17 Ridgeline has nav based on Garmin which I really liked on my Nuvi. Simple and very easy to enter an address and get going. Only thing better is the Apple Carplay option where you can tell Siri where to navigate, and she listens while bringing up the map.

I ventured into Asheville, NC again and this time I didn't look at the map. I just listened to the b**** in the box and it worked out well.

That bitch lies to me sometimes. We have a love/hate relationship. Sometimes she sends me far out of my way, for no reason. She let me down last weekend. For some reason she doesnt like the Cali 108 and wants to reroute me around the 4 to 395 every time I go up to Bridgeport.

Our Subaru nav is terrible, but the BMW is great. The Tacoma is somewhere in between.

The Toyota nav is beyond terrible. Worst thing about the truck, by far, in my opinion.

The only good thing about it is the great laughs me and my daughter have when I ask it "directions to the hospital", and it replies "how many hotdogs would you like me to cook?".....or something along those lines.

It's truly like talking to an idiot at a loud concert when it comes to voice command. The screen shows no detail zoomed out (why must the road I'm driving on disappear?), and the differentiation between land, water, parkland etc could do with a few shades more contrast. Also, it will chose terrible circuitous routes that will double your travel time. Try harder next time Toyota. The Nav sucks balls.

I absolutely hate the Nav. Went on a 2k+ mile trip and used my old Garmin GPS. Did not want to even try the Toyota nav. If I knew Toyota would give me my $$$ back to take the whole system out, I would do it in a minute. The nav system is definitely not ready for prime time and I am very disappointed in Toyota.

Have also used Garmin Montana 600 with dash mount vs Nav. You can bring up any map stores, including Mexico Topo, or Garmin Streets and Trips.
Otherwise Waze or Google maps have more up to date data. Nav data includes less and is soon out/date. Update $ Ripoff. Display should be able to mirror phone screen.
