If the OP has 3-4" of lift with those coils, they most definitely are the length made not to be preloaded. You wouldn't gain 3-4" of lift with shorter coils set at 1.75"

Maybe I'm wrong, but it makes sense to me.

I have no experience with these coils, but I was just thinking out loud.

OP, your sons truck will look just as good at 2.5" of lift and ride a lot better

Question being would I need smaller tires? We are rubbing a little now on the right side, was waiting to get that fixed until I figure this out.

Don't go with smaller tires, they look great as it is. What is it rubbing on? The cab mount? Becuase no amount of lift will fix that. You need to cut it back, it's pretty easy to do with an angle grinder. Welding it closed is the hard part (if you're not a welder).

If it's just rubbing on the plastic fender and pinch weld, just trim it a little and hammer the pinch weld flat. You can read all about it on various TW threads. It is super easy.

Put the ring on the lower notch, keep the top plate, get alignment. Alignment #'s should be

    0* toe
    0* camber
    as close to 3* caster
torque cam bolts to at least 110ft#'s

Also, what lift is there in the rear?

You won't need smaller tires. They're rubbing because the lift is maxed, alignment is off. Once those two are taken care of, your rub will go away if not be very minimal. You may have to do a slight bit of plastic trimming. Where are you located?

It's not on the highest notch. You can see the highest notch in the picture.
    upload_2017-9-6_11-27-42.jpg
No they don't. These are the coils he has on there. You can see the p/n in the first picture. OP, your issue is that you have some slightly heavier springs, preloaded on some 5100s and those two things are making the ride worse. If you want a better ride, you can ditch those coils and get some Old Man Emu 887 coils, put the 5100s on 0 (that lowest groove) and that will get you ~3" of lift. After that, see what rubs and fix that as well.

You have no idea what his tire size, wheel specs, or alignment numbers are. By saying this you're just blowing smoke up the OP's ass and misinforming him.

Agreed, he also didn't state where it was rubbing. Fix the ride, then worry about rubbing. IMO if you're looking for 3" of lift do it with the proper coils. You already have the 5100's so go from there.

You're right. I didn't read what tire size he has written in the first post, I assumed with the amount of lift that he has his caster # is way low, have no clue where he's rubbing, can't estimate his wheel back space based on pictures he's posted, and have no clue what I'm talking about because I don't have anything to do with these trucks on a daily basis.

My attention to detail is much greater than what you may think. Based on pics and a few facts, I have concluded what will fix this truck's issues with ride and rub. If you look close enough, you can see where the tire is rubbing. You can also see that the Cab Mount Chop may have already been done, although it may have not been done to its full potential. Take another look at the pics he has posted and you may also see some of the key issues that need to be addressed.

I agree with what you're saying. But without the facts from the owner it's hard to say 100% what's going on.

I think we can all agree that preloading (3rd notch at that) on those coils is why his truck rides like a donkey cart.

I'm curious to know how the rear is lifted? If it's with leafs/aal then you may need to swap out coils to maintain a level look. If it's a block you can remove it and lower the front as is (same coils) and sit level.

I have that exact same setup with the 5100s at .85 and a top plate and it rides like a cloud.
