Double bump but the answer is still backcountry navigator. If we could only get the touch screens in the newer tacoma to mirror my phone so I could see backcountry on the big screen I would be set.

I'm torn on whether or not to buy a Delorme In reach communicator. I have a Garmin, but I haven't used it in years. My iPhone is a much better a GPS unit when I'm off the beaten track and just use it with an app.

However, I do like the idea of having a GPS communicator that I can pay a month to month fee for when I'm going to be out of cell service. I kinda like having the backup system in case I needed to use it. Just haven't pulled the trigger on buying one yet.

We just ordered the Delorme products for our field biologists. Currently they carry sat phones and spots. Spots are super reliable but lack the ability to transmit complex messages. Sat phones work most of the time but call quality blows. I will report at the end of the field season on Delormes product.

Thanks...That will be very helpful. I'm turned off by Spot's annual fee to keep it activated. I only go where I can't get cell service two or three times a year, at most, so I prefer a more simple payment option mostly

thanks for this thread! After doing some research PDF maps is now Avenza Maps and they realized apps for Windows 10 PC and mobile. Gave both a test run with importing pdf files of san Bernardino maps. Both worked great. Going to try it on some trails this weekend.

We use Avenza at work some. It works pretty good if you have access to, or the ability in ArcGIS to, make a detailed map of the area you are going before you leave the office. Overall some of the other Apps are much more powerful but Avenza is a decent tool at times.

I still say bcnav. From my understanding there was another app that just rolled out mvum when bcnav has had it for quite some time now.

I believe they will be coming to ios soon too.

I'm using Gaia GPS on an old RCA tablet from Walmart in a RAM tablet holder with a Globalsat BT-359 Bluetooth puck.

I haven't put it through its paces yet, but I like the interface so far.

    Yep, me, too.

I'm very happy with Back Country Navigator. I even spent the $10 to get the add free version. You get more map choices as well.

Have you ever used Gaia or Backcountry? I'm curious how they compare to Locus Pro which is what I have, but I haven't tried the other 2 so have no frame of reference
