Thats what was in my last car and it just felt so right. The motion, the feel, everything about that rx8 clutch just felt proper. Now this truck engages 60-70% up, notchy and odd. Swings up and in in a loud annoying way and im fully convinced theres a flow control valve in there somewhere to "smooth" out shifts.

I feel like I will get lucky...I go to the Toyota dealer where my old man used to be service/parts manager for like 20 years, everyone still knows me. I have some hope of good treatment!

I'm going in tomorrow morning, I will keep you all updated!

My 2000 used to do that too, I recall that there was a stupid plastic horseshoe clip on the end of the spring that would break and cause metal to metal contact.

I too would be in for some sort of completely done over clutch mechanism/pedal...remove accumulator, direct mount reservoir/upgraded tube size, metal pedal, good bushings. All seem like simple things for an OEM, but nooooooooooo. :annoyed:

Seems like it would be very simple to delete...All you need is an aluminum block drilled through with 2 proper sized pipe fittings on either end.

    Off to SolidWorks!

This is 2 mods I will accomplish (or try to) that nobody else has done yet. I am also working on a "fog light on with high beam" mod that requires almost no modification and retains the factory switch...this is what happens when you're a mechanical engineer with access to electrical engineering resources!

Yeah probably in that accumulator is something that says if you sidestep the clutch to only flow at such n such a rate. This is probably causing slow movement in the winter also as fluid inevitably ends up thicker.

I remember one morning last winter i had fully released the clutch in first and it took a moment but the clutch engaged slowly like i was being careful. Tough to describe but it wasnt right at all. And we are talking maybe 0 degrees out. Hate to think if need my truck in the middle of the night on a snowmobile trip when its really cold!

Have the same issue. Toyota says my master cylinder in the clutch assembly is busted and are waiting on the replacement part.

Hmm maybe an even simpler solution would be to see if the guts of that thing could be rendered "inert" - ie drilled out or otherwise messed with. Then just re-attach the lines/bleed and go lol!

Yup. That same day had me worried too. I dumped the clutch and it would literally take 1-1.5 seconds to come all the way up!

We are going to find out that's for sure! This long weekend will give me plenty of time to give it a go.

But we are in new england. Certainly there are trucks in colder climates. How to those even work? Or does a truck going to canada have something else helping? Maybe different fluid? What do our more northern members say about cold weather clutch performance

Definitely interested in your results, clutch weirdness needs to go.

    Cheers man,

My Canadian truck definitely does not have anything else helping. I'm not even close to living in the coldest parts of the country though. Plenty of members from NT/Yukon/ and the entire Midwest could chime in.

    UPDATES GALORE!

My clutch pedal got better for a bit. Cancelled my appointment. Made no sounds at all for a few days, then it failed catastrophically today. Going to the dealer ASAP. The pedal now moves side to side 1” in either direction...not a good sign!

I ordered a short hose to remove the accumulator. I had my father ask a Toyota field technical specialist, and none of them off hand knew what the accumulator DID. All of them seemed to think it could be bypassed without issue though, so I ordered a hose. Will do a new thread when I bypass to update on pedal feel and do a DIY! It seems pretty easy to get to and remove.

had my clutch replaced at about 600 miles. was hearing a quiet bearing type noise when pressing the pedal, kind of like a bad pilot bearing. My shifts also felt notability notchy and several times I would not realize that my first gear had not gone into gear completely at dead stops until I would let the clutch out and would result in grinding the shit out of the synchro teeth. Had it test driven by an independent mechanic and then had a dealer technician ride along with me and compare to another 6MT truck they had. The Tech was advised by TAS to drop the tranny and inspect every part. He found that the clutch pressure plate was over torqued on a few bolts and the flywheel had developed hot spots from clutch still rubbing. Had entire clutch assembly and fly wheel plus all bearings replaced. Truck has been shifting smooth ever since.

Clutch pedal occasionally shakes/creaks when under high load such as in reverse going up-hill.

You're going to beat me to the punch, this has been on my to-do list since the day I drove the truck home!

Keep us posted on the hose you use, if it fits, etc.

Also, did the squeaks get resolved? Mine started doing this recently really bad and is annoy AF, 11k miles on it. Just got back from the dealer not fixing my rear end howl too... back for another trip. Might gut it out until the 15k service.

What do you guys think about bypassing the accumulator and any problems with warranty claim down the road if done? I want to do this so bad but also sort of don't want to risk it. But I might anyways. I guess the accumulator could always be put pack if warranty work is getting done. Thoughts?
