So, I ran a search and did not find any details about people having issues with their AC systems on 2016 TRD OR Tacoma's...but, here's where I am now...I've had my truck since December 2015...I've got about 58,000 miles and have had all the required maintenance done on schedule...naturally my warrantee expired a long time ago...

Started my truck up after work Monday and started the AC system since it was about 85 degrees outside and the fan blew, but no cold air...started to drive and the vent and AC light on the right side of the climate control system went out. I pushed the AC button again and in about 60 seconds it went out again...No AC, Period...The other problem is Toyota is the only one that can work on it around here in the Western part of Northern Virginia as it has a new type of refrigerant and the piping is a different size and thread pattern is different too, than any "normal" car/truck...

I've made an appointment with a Toyota Dealer next week, but, what a pain in the ass...you would think this stuff is standard and anyone could work on it...this is like in the early 70s when euro and jap cars were using metric bolts and you had to but two different sets of tools to work on anything...I guess its just a sign of the times...I'm getting older and the crazy's are pushing their environmental crap that does nothing to really help the environment, it just makes it harder to get it fixed...I'm glad I don't have a coal burning power plan...I'd be really screwed...

Probably a rock strike to your condenser. happens all the time on every brand. Just be glad we don't have the "environmentally friendly" R-1234YF, yet. It's shown to be flammable under some circumstances (read in an accident), but at least the polar bears will still be around to murder seals.

Oh crap! It IS R-1234YF......we're all gonna die!

The AC light on the dash going out is the AC compressor shutting itself off safely before you burn it up running it with no pressure/refrigerant/lubrication.

If the light goes out, there’s no refrigerant pressure in the system. No refrigerant pressure means it all leaked out somewhere. Damaged line, bad seal/o-ring, damaged condenser, all are good explanations. Keep from using the compressor unless you want to turn a service bill into a SERVICE BILL.

Thanks for the re-assurance...I have an appointment with Toyota Tuesday to have recall things fixed and they will fix this too at the same time...

So...My Tacoma is at a Ourisman Chantilly Toyota in Virginia...They have told me the compressor and pump burned up to the tune of $2900...The dam thing didn't act up or smell funny...this thing just stopped working...The good news is, instead of buying the manufacturers extended warrantee I purchased Geico's Mechanical Failure Insurance when I purchased the truck, which has cost me $42 every 6 months. The repairs will be costing me a total of $250...so, I guess there is a silver lining at the end of the story. I will be picking the truck up to day...The strange thing is they had to order the parts and it took two days to get them...hummm

I just looked into the cost of this. My dealership charges .75 cents a gram for this stuff. That's about $340 a pound!

$2900, that's freaking insane. I could see something like that on a house system, but a car, c'mon.

I really hope I won't run into anything like this, for I did not buy a warranty.

Good deal on the Geico plan....

But I would be asking 500 more questions to the dealer... why did the compressor burn up? What caused it? Was there a leak elsewhere? Faulty parts? Seems like a hefty repair bill for a 2 year old truck, regardless of mileage. If Toyota cannot make a compressor last at least 10 years / 100K then there is a problem, period.

My buddies 2016 Tacoma had his A/C compressor go out on him on the way to his very first oil change. Compressor locked up while he was going down i5. He said the engine started to sound funny and he could smell burning electrical and rubber. Had to be towed to the dealer. All is well now though.

Toyota ExtraCare Platinum. Get it. This is like a case study in why you should.
