Soooo True! We call it 4 wheeling... and camping is just part of it. You know what happens though... Some one makes a good video with decent music and cool gadgets, then everyone wants all that stuff. Then they all make videos copying the first one... and the fad grows.

Look up overlanding on youtube. It's hilarious how many of the videos start with some nice scenery and some folk music (or light techno ambient)... then they break into the narrative with the scruffy guy sitting in the dark garage with the truck shadowing behind him. Then it breaks to a scene where everyone is either breaking down RTTs or cooking breakfast on their slide out stove while reaching for avocados in the Yeti LOL...

Too poor to list anything interesting.
I'm only getting a RTT to put on a trailer. I don't want the hassle of unpacking, setting up, and loading my gear in every time I want to move my vehicle. I've had the options and the means to get a RTT and some bed bars, but not for me.

Fads don't last 80 years. RTTs have been around since the 1930s.

Different preference for different travel. Some travelers benefit highly from them, others don't. Where you fall is up to you and your use.

Trendy? Definitely. A fad? Not at all.

Hi there, I live 100% of the time out of my roof-top tent on the road.

    Pros:
    • Fast as hell to set up (2 minutes) and tear down (5 minutes)
    • Great quality across all manufacturers
    • Off the ground, no worries about rain or wildlife
    • Quite comfortable with memory foam mattress and anti-condensation mat

    Cons:
    • Have to tear down whenever you want to move your vehicle
    • Expensive
    • Can collect moisture without anti-condensation mat
    • Possibly cumbersome on some rigs (especially when mounted up high)

For me, it made sense to keep my center of gravity low and mount the tent over the bed of the truck and try to keep the top of the tent almost even with my roofline. I'm still getting about 18mpg w/ 4.10s on 33" tires and full armor. If anyone can think of anything else that I should be adding to this list, let me know! I'd be happy to modify it and/or answer any questions!

Agree, but $1500 for a tent is reasonable when you're shopping 10-15 year tents. A canvas RTT on an aluminum frame should be capable of a similar life span.

    Hilleburg FTW.
