Cool convo disintegrate. If we want it go this route, plenty of people who wheel have trailers. Or, is the off-road trailer market non existent? I could be in an alternate universe.

To me, best of all worlds here (well, except for the jeep part):

Hell, you could even put an RTT on one of these. Take it about anywhere, park it, pull out the camping gear and tent, and have a ready and unloaded truck to go exploring in. I do find that when I'm packing gear, coolers, extra gas, tools, etc., etc. for an extended trip, the 5' bed of the truck is the one thing that just doesn't quite do it for me. Plans for me to clean up the Jayco Baja early next year, sell it, and pick up something like this.

I consider a fad something that's popular now but will go out of style. I think it's safe to say the RTT will stay, so not a fad. But are people just buying them because it's "cool" to have one? Probably

So what exactly did you have an issue with in the first place? That I don't believe overlanders with baby seats are overwhelming this thread, or that I think most people would find it hard to make a life based around wheeling, family and camping while financing all three?

The weight on the RTT if you put it on the roof has to be of concern when actually crawling though right? The flippac doesn't put as much weight up top right? I always worried off camber with the RTT more than I would have without it.

I got tired of packing up the RTT every morning and setting it up every night. Testing out the ground tent in Shaver was great since I got back to camp after a day and just chilled instead of setting up. If moving every day like you do most of the time, it wouldn't matter though. Just depends on how you get around.

No offense but you guys aren't running anything particularly hard. There's a big difference from riding scenic trails and wheeling hard trails....

For scenic riding and picture taking like you do, a RTT probably makes sense. For somebody looking to push the limits of their rig, they do not. No one wants to smash a $1000 tent on a rock face or tree or rip off their Jerry can holder/spare the first time they drop down a waterfall.

Not everyone is big into "wheeling, hardcover off roading" some of us that are financially stable and adults like to get off the beatan path just to be out there, not prove anything about our "rigs"(pun intended). RTT are perfect for cross country travel. I have seen many Families with Kids and dogs enjoying their RTT.

Lol. I have $100 in my bank account and about 5,000 miles to go with it.

I gave up everything from my comfortable life (house, job, family) to jump on the road. Anyone can do it, but the first step is a doozy

I'm not saying you can't either. You just have to be prepared to write that check for a new one.

It's a very regional topic too. Southwest wheeling is way different from Midwest/Southeast/Northeast trails. You're insane to put a snorkel or an RTT on out here for anything but the mildest of fire roads. Trees remove snorkels and RTT's faster than you could imagine on the tight, wet, muddy trails here.

Yeh, there are some that think if you're not running 35s and longtravel you don't offroad.

My viewpoint is that it probably is a fad (based off the whole #vanlife IG trend), but I really don't care. Makes me have a little more fun on my getaways from work, and that makes me happy.

I tend to do a lot of "waypoint" style trips as opposed to "basecamp" outings, so I would end up packing up camp every morning anyways.
