I used OBD Fusion (Car Diagnostics) by OCTech, LLC found on Google Play. Yes, it does cost $3.99. I did not purchase the $9.99 for the Toyota Enhanced Diagnostics. Not needed for the Calibration ID's. I may get it in the future for other stuff. But, I would like to know if anyone has this and what additionally you can do with it.

So, good chance that the OBD Fusion app would work with your existing Bluetooth OBDII Scan Tool.

I had the very first TSB done and it seemed to fix any slipping when cold. Haven't had a problem since then.

I'm going in tomorrow for the 30k service, should I go ahead and request to have them update it to the Rev 1?

 

You must complain about any known issues to get rev 1. If you have no issues then don't get it done. You have 80k miles of coverage for this problem. I say if you have good consistent shift patterns and no gear hunting then keep on truckin. You can always get it done later if the need arises. I would not get it done just for the reason it is available. Now if you plan on buying the OVTune then you need to get rev1 done per OVTunes recommendation.

 

Well, I got mine done today. I definitely notice a difference in the shifting. Driving on a hilly highway with the cruise control on feels like much less of a game of Whack a Mole for gears. Couldn't seem to convince them that I needed my ATF physically inspected. If I hear someone say "closed system" or "electronically monitored" one more time, I'm gonna slap them.

 

It's funny that in 40 plus years of driving never had an issue when transmissions had a dipstick. Now the only Toyota dip"stick" is the ace mechanic working on your truck.

 

Any diy to check and fill transmission fluid?

 

I have a QS 2017 TRD OffRoad DBL Cab 4x4 ordered....pick up ~Sept 28....Harvey got my 2016 TRD....flooded.
So with the new 2017 do I still need to have them check the AT fluid level like in the 2016's....mine at the time was 1 1/2 qts. low.
Also had the 1st TSB gear thing done.
Anything else?
I will be picking up in Columbus, OH then a 2 day drive to Houston.

 

I think the 17 is updated software but, any new car dealer prep, should have dealer check and verify all fluids. Especially before a long road trip. I would insist they do it.

 

Yeah, so I guess definitely the AT fluid.

 

I would want brake, windshield washer, oil, transmission and maybe even differential fluid checked. That should always be part of the dealers pre-delivery inspection. You never know what was possibly missed at assembly. That is the dealers job before delivering any new or used vehicle. I worked at a couple of dealerships so I know what should be done. They even have checklists for this but no guarantee that they actually do it.

I think I just found the perfect thing to fix our transmissions. T-SB-0077-16 rev 2

 

Second, my transmission slips about 1000 RPMs when shifting into 4th gear when the engine is cold. This must be ruining the transmission.

Now I am only going to be guessing, but with my experience with my 6 speed auto diesel, the strategy the put in the tcm is to allow the slipping to help speed up the warming of motor and tranny...

Toyota may be doing that as well. I have been following the threads on the issues with the new Tacoma and honestly, its not their fault per say, but more what our Government is demanding from the exhaust emissions...

Our Government expects to see flowers pour out the exhaust pipes of our vehicles... They had Cummins take an awesome motor and ruin that for light truck use... I have a Dodge 09' dually that I had love,hate and hell with, till I ended up taking all that emission stuff off to keep the truck from going into limp mode constantly... Long bad story, so won't go there.
But bottom line here is for one thing, this ethanol fuel is one problem, the government has forced on the gas motor owners. The no alcohol fuel is so much better for all motors.

Put it in your lawn equipment and its like night and day in my stuff, for sure the hot little 2-stroke stuff of mine.

The other issue is the fuel air mixture in the combustion chambers at the slower speeds, and how the scatter of the timing with the throttle resolution is not smooth and like liquid smooth flow. So you experience hard transitions that really stand out at the slower rpm's where the lack of good torque to hp ratio is bad.
These are little motors in the grand scheme of things, so they are alot more sensitive to anyone of these, let alone all of them at once.

I use to work for an outboard motor company, which went through all this same stuff and didn't have a multiple geared tranny to help soften the transitions throughout the throttle resolution, as we do with the cars and trucks. Its really tuff with a 2-stroke 6000 rpm outboard motor. The resolution of the fuel map in relationship to intake air quality and flow rate at given points or endless in relationship and never enough resolution to get the task done without the hard transitions.
Its like running out of paper to write on to get the point across.

That sound good... I just know that Dodge had their 6 speed auto slipping to help warm everything up! I hate that strategy as most of us that think out of the box, know all that is doing is burning the disc, torque converter as well as the oil. None of which blows my skirt up
They will get this all worked out, its just the time to do so. Its like getting more pixels on the big screen. They are building more resolution into the ecm to work with the fuel map our government approved. Which doesn't have near enough fuel to do the job required of the motor as is...
Its really a sad day when you buy a new truck and are faced with growing pains like this, at the consumer expense. This sould not go to the market before its ready, but most if not all manufactures have no choice but to bring it, or loose market place without.
Good luck guys with all this, try really hard to see that its more of our government requirements fault than the manufactures...
