Between the Kings, bumper, winch, BD light bar, etc., I'd be into the truck an additional $6k or so. Thinking it is best to call agent and get a rider for the additional mods? Aside from a wreck, one of my fears is having the truck stolen for parts. A few of tempting upgrades for someone. Hell, I imagine someone with a bolt cutter, some balls, and a few minutes time, and all the remote reservoirs with compression adjusters would be a easy free upgrade for someone! And it's happened to me before (an at the time un-modded gen1 was stolen with 1k miles on it by someone who apparently wanted to convert their gen1 pre-runner to 4WD and white face gauges).

Currently with State Farm, but agent was an old family friend and just retired, so may take this opportunity to go USAA finally.

Different insurance companies handle modifications differently. Most of them consider the modifications to be part of the vehicle (and covered) if they are permanently attached (usually bolted on is suitable to meet that definition).

Some companies, like the one I work for have moved away from that. Some companies now include a sublimit for modifications (ours is $2500) and sell extra coverage for a small fee.

All insurance companies that I'm familiar with offer coverage for mods in some way (free or add-on) so just make sure you ask the right questions. Make sure you give your agent current photos for his file even if he doesn't ask for them. When a truck is stolen and not recovered you don't want them to have to take your word for the fact that it was modded.

So far! Main things I want to make sure I have covered:

    Kings x 4 = $3k
    C4 Lo Pro = $1,100 with powdercoat
    Warn M800 / Synthetic = $850
    BD S8-20 = $550

UCA's likely in future, along with rims, rear leafs, etc., but for now that's about it.

It will really depend on your insurance company. Some will cover anything bolted to the truck, but some will only insure OEM-equivalent replacements without a rider.

I've had a couple of cars with modification riders and the riders were pretty cheap.

    Yep.

I tried adding something like 10k mods insurance (way low estimate I'm sure) and it upped my insurance 400 a month. I currently pay around 450 for six months full coverage.:rofl::rofl:

I have 2k coverage from my insurance on my mods. I had to get an additional 12k coverage for the rest . Only 200$ a year through liberty Mutual

State Farm covers all aftermarket additions in your current policy without additional coverage needed or higher premiums. All you need is a picture of the item on your truck. Receipts aren't required, either.

Ask me how I know? In February they paid me out on a total loss settlement for nearly $30k on a truck that was $24k new in 2013. I know the ins and outs of State Farm.

You're solid. If you have questions or want professional confirmation, call your agent.

Can't say I find logic in it being a state by state policy, but confirm before you take my word for it.

My agent confirmed this 2 years ago. When my truck was totaled, I didn't have to submit anything. No pics, either. For a claim, say someone stole my shell - I'd assume pics come into play at that point.

All I did was write a list of mods, with links showing their retail value, what date they were added to my vehicle (so they can calculate diminished value) and they wrote me a check.

I drove my truck for 4 years and 58k miles for a $6k profit.

Thanks mainly to aftermarket parts and the ridiculous California/Tacoma market values.

My agent is in Santa Rosa, and this was filed in Feb. So, either they changed policies in the last few months or other dudes agent was trying to fatten their wallet.
