Isn't that when you see a slim, difficult trail and your pants get tight?

The whole "overlanding" is exceedingly popular right now, not just RTTs in general. Will it stand the test of time? Who knows.
I've been car camping since I was 2 years old. Fast forward 34 years and I've got 58 days of camping in this year. And for the trips where it's camping in a different spot every night, I would hate to be back in a ground tent. I'm all about "speed is of the essence" with take down/setup and my RTT does that job for me. Do I install every tent pole in my RTT? Hell no. There's no need unless you're doing it for the gram, it's really windy, or you're staying put for a few days. I normally do just the entrance poles and sometimes the rear poles. I ran into a zipper issues once, and it was after a shitload of mud. Pulled the cover and zipper off and pressure washed it and it's been fine ever since.
At the end of the day, buy what suits you, your budget, and your needs. And for those that hop on the RTT bandwagon without thinking it through...craigslists has been pretty awesome this year in terms of inexpensive RTTs.

I buy all my tepuis used. People buy them. use them twice then dump them for half the price.

No Left Turn in Moab, All Day Sucker or Sleepy Hollow at Flat Nasty, Upper Rock Garden or Lion's Den at Harlan...Trails beyond fire roads that mistakes will result in body damage. Contrary to popular belief in this community, running fire roads every weekend while taking lots of pictures doesn't constitute wheeling hard.

I keep going back to it, but there is a big regional difference...Not a ton of newer vehicles are being wheeled out east because of the constant threat of body damage scaring people away from all but the easiest of trails. Things get sloppy and tight in hurry...It's hilarious to watch guys rip roof racks/shovels/lights off when they lean into trees that would otherwise miss the body of the truck. You can be extra careful and do everything to can to avoid damage but inevitably the Midwest takes its toll over time.

Another factor is that there is no such thing as public land in the Midwest or Southeast. Designated parks are typically your only option and they are smaller and have a designated camping area. There's no such thing as expo out here because of property lines...You setup camp, wheel in the park, and come back to camp at night to drink. That's it... Normally there is a couple of hours on the interstate between parks minimum and you aren't staying off the grid at all because it's so densely populated.

There's a pretty wide range of wheeling between fire roads and Rusty Nail in Moab. You're also comparing apples to oranges. You have a SAS and 37s. You built a crawler.
But again, pretty broad range of wheeling. Plenty of us have run the Rubicon, Trifecta, Behind the Rocks, Dusy Ershim, Barrett, Miller Jeep, Doran with our shitty IFS and RTT without damage. And you already pointed out why a RTT is useless where you live. Well...I don't live there. There's more dirt roads and trails in Nevada than paved roads. I'm not restricted to camp in one spot and call it a day. And when you spend 2-3 days on Rubicon or Dusy, sure is nice to not have to worry about a ground tent on a place that is nothing but rocks.

Buy and build to suite your needs. I don't give a shit what you sleep in. Doesn't make my style of wheeling and where I choose to sleep a fad.

Moab is not hard, spectacular but not technically challenging. Almost the whole place can be run in a stock rig with no locker because the grip is spectacularly high. Hell, the guided tours use H1's on Hell's Revenge because it is so wide open and Dirt Every Day did Hell's gate three times in a stock Tundra. Mistakes are severely punished out there if you get off the line though.

I thought I rememebered a guy running Moab in a Crown Vic and .....

At least I have my dignity and do not enjoy taking videos of me swimming with other men....

I'm with you...I'd call BS on 18mpg regularly. Especially when you add a sail on the top.

He doesn't know what Dusy is. He's homophobically wheeling too hard in Indiana.

Not a fad. Allows you to setup tent in any weather except for scorching hot.
A tent, hammock or whatever aside from a camper/trailer, you couldnt have camped here. you would have gotten wet and cold.

LMAO. Glad you know everyone that wheels so that you can make a generalization like that.

I've had my RTT on my truck for 4+ years. Only time I took it off was to replace it with another one. Here are just a few examples of me with it on the trail.
