no. first if pointed downhill. R if the front points uphill. also turn your front wheels to steer into a curb if you have one, which will also stop or slow it.

That could be why my truck was hard to start after rolling backward in 2nd. It's running fine now, though. Drove it 700 miles today...

I'm confused on this issue....I've been driving manuals exclusively since I was 18 (about 14 years now) and I've always parked with my vehicle in 1st if facing uphill and reverse if pointed downhill (I always use the parking brake too). So are we saying that's a good way to potentially damage the engine? Want to make sure I change the habit if so...

I'm the same way, but apparently so. I guess it makes sense. I just assumed the engine couldn't turn over "backwards" which is why I did it that way, but they're saying it'll turn over and damage it.

I had parked my truck facing down a steep hill. 1st gear without the parking brake couldn't completely hold the truck. It would roll forward a few inches then stop, then a few more inches then stop, and so on...

This is urging me to get my parking brake fixed, it's been super loose for a long time now (will barely hold the truck on it's own, if I'm on anything steeper than a driveway incline it won't hold it hardly at all).

Yeah I got it fixed once but it seems to loosen up again really easily; I accidentally barely drove forward with it engaged once afterward and it loosened back up again almost immediately as bad as before. Shop I took it to might have done a poor job though, I've been meaning to look on here and see if there's a simple DIY way to tighten the brake...

I'll check it out but that might be for 2nd gens only...a quick search though has a few people saying you can back up slowly and pull the brake and it will tighten it up a bit. Might try that even though it sounds like a redneck fix lol.

That's supposed to adjust the shoes, but might do nothing if it's the cable that needs attention.

I read that too, and need to mess with it since it's so easy.

nearly all e-brakes are cable operated. They stretch, and need to be adjusted.

This is under my cup holders. Can definitely be adjusted here.

I get 15 clicks out of my e-brake. I have several inches of dead travel before the clicking starts.

Does anyone think 5-6 mph is too fast to shift into 1st. Was caught in a situation where the light turned green right as I was about to stop and had cars driving up behind me.

I don't think so, I do the same even though my truck doesn't like going into first smoothly unless I'm at or near a full stop (common for RWD manuals). But 5-6mph in 2nd gear lugs the motor and I'd rather avoid that
