Is it possible to purchase a 2017 Tacoma OR with the access cab, long bed and manual transmission?

How weird. I should think there would be a fair amount of interest in this configuration. Why only in Canada? Is it possible to purchase the configuration in Canada if you're a US citizen?

it's a common complaint around here. both are so desirable, aren't they? long beds have AT's here only.

dunno about Canada purchase and import... that could be quite a project.

Never made any sense to me either why it's not offered here.

Might have to investigate that. This issue is, my honey and I want to put a camper shell on the bed so it has a sleep-in capability when needed. I'm around 6 feet tall, so sleeping in the 5ft bed doesn't seem practical. Do you like the short bed on your Pro? Do you find the double cab all that necessary? We only have 2 people to haul (and a couple of dogs). I sure hate the thought of having an automatic transmission but maybe it's ok. Any thoughts on the automatic transmission?

The Dealer gave me an Automatic to test drive for about 3 days, I personally hated it but I also never owned an Automatic in my life. I had to buy a Double Cab in order to get the Manual but the extra interior space is pretty nice, you can always look into a Bed Rack and a Roof Top Tent if you are interested in taking it Camping.

@Vaquita you can get a TRD Sport in access cab, long bed, 4x4 with the 6MT...

Missing out on the locker (which you can add your own) but that’s basically it on a MT. No crawl control to begin with.

Plus you get a hood scoop!

Switch it out with some chunky all terrain tires and boom, off road ready.

The only other way around is go get a Canadian rig, pay through the nose for it, and stare at KMH every day until you get rid of it.

Thank you so much. This is very helpful. A few more questions if you don't mind: Are you saying this configuration in the TRD Sport would be equivalent to the OR model? Are there any other important modifications for off road which would be lacking in the Sport? Suspension, wheels, etc? The Sport is described as mainly for street driving and our truck is going to have a lot of rough, off-road duty. What is the locker and what do you mean when you say there's no crawl control to begin with? (Is this strictly a feature of automatics?) What is KMH? Actually, I'm starting to feel really torn. Shakerhood's comments about the extra interior room (in the double cab) is starting to make me wonder. Can you tell me more about the bed rack and roof top tent?

The Sport is more street oriented but can still be fine going off the pavement, I would test drive them to see what you like, I personally like the smoother ride of the Off Road. Bradshawnh is correct that on the Manual Off Road you will not have Crawl Control but you get the ATRAC System in place of it which is a really good system in its own right. If you search around the Forum a little bit you will find Threads on the Bed Racks and Roof Top Tents, looking forward to going that route on my truck.

An MT was top priority for me, so I ended up with a TRD OR DCSB and don't really miss the long bed, despite having camped out in the back of a 1st gen Taco. The extra room in the cab really is pretty nice. Not sure I'd go with an access cab long bed now...

I'm starting to feel pretty persuaded. Now if I can only persuade my female partner. Most of the time we will tent camp when we're using it in the back country, but there are always exceptional times when there's either no time, or weather or landscape are unfavorable and you're forced to spend the night in the truck: the five foot bed with a cap doesn't sound as appealing as a 6-footer. It's helpful to hear others' experiences. I've been using a stick so long in my old RAV4, I just can't imagine downgrading to an automatic.

An MT is something you'll use every day. Camping in the bed is maybe once or twice a year? :)

My stock access cab TRD Sport 4x4 MT took me lots of cool places! But it looks a little different now!

I think the hardest thing is the climate you camp in. A tent is much less favorable to colder camping than a full shell/pop up config in a long bed.

That said, I have a DCSB OR 6MT and wouldn’t look back. For me, I haul 4 people a LOT more than I camp in my truck. The access cab has basically no more utility in my experience than an old school regular cab.

If you’re thinking about using this thing daily, or have friends or a family, I say DCSB. DCLB is too big and you’re stuck with an auto.

If you want to build a dedicated (or part time use) camping rig, ACLB is the way to go.

A sport has A-TRAC too. If you’re planning to lift or upgrade shocks at all, the difference between a Sport and Off Road 6MT is nothing. If you’re leaving it stock, you might notice a slight difference in factory shocks, and the stock tires are less favorable in the dirt.

Both problems easy to solve with aftermarket parts and the help of this forum
