Sport does not have ATRAC, that is only OR Manual

In reality the Sport has a Simulated Limited Slip, uses the brakes, l think 08 or 09 was the last real Limited Slip Tacoma.

If you're set on access cab MT with a long box, get the Sport and just add the OR (or PRO) skid plates and more aggressive tires. Unless you plan on doing some very aggressive wheeling, it's likely that you won't even notice the other small differences between the OR and Sport model (dampers, sway bars, diff, etc.). The color matched bumper on the Sport is nice too

Any recommendations on tires? We'll be using it off-road mostly in the desert southwest and Utah. Possibly Alaska. Not into dune-climbing. Just want something solid and dependable for slow rock-crawling up those barely visible tracks in the mountains that others have made before us. With proper tires, do you know if the ground clearance would be the same for Sport vs. OR? Not sure if I understand the difference in the differential, if it's significant or not. Not sure what dampers or sway bars are. But I'll take your word for it, that it's probably not significant. I'm really down to either going with the OR, access cab and long bed with the dreaded automatic transmission; or choosing the Sport (with access cab and long bed), upgrading it as far as possible for off-roading, and getting my beloved MT. Today, I'm leaning more toward the OR, so I'll be sure to have my off-roading needs fully covered, but I have to give up the MT to do it. I hate it that I have to make that choice. The non-negotiable points are the access cab and long bed. So it's either get the MT and go with the Sport; or give up the MT and go with the OR. I have an old-fashioned bias toward the MT but I haven't heard much negative about the automatics. It seems like you either like em or you don't. Going to the dealership for the first time tomorrow.

Hey Bradshawnh, what would I have to do to lift or upgrade shocks? I'm assuming this would be done after I purchase the truck? I'm not really inclined to do the work myself. Sounds like it would be a change I would want to make, if I got the Sport. I want to have the best suspension and clearance I can have. Any idea what labor and parts might cost? What are your thoughts on the manual vs. automatic? I think I'm mainly worried about the longevity of the automatic vs. the manual. This may be the last truck I buy.

Search and read. There's tons of threads about lifting, tires, wheels, budgets, you name it. You can do it after you buy the truck. It shouldn't cost much, but whatever it does, is money well spent. A good kit will make the ride comfortable, greatly improve off road capability and looks, and last many years to come without constant hassle.

You can do anything from 5100s, up to full long travel on coilovers. Cost varies from a few hundred to a many thousand or more. Stay away from the cheapest options and spacer lifts.

Another low budget option could be buying take-offs from someone who lifted their off road and is selling the stock suspension components. They are easy to find and only a few hundred bucks at most. PM me if you want to buy mine! haha

I got a manual and I am happy I did. Automatic is more effortless, but manual is more reliable and the driving experience is more rewarding. I was reading a lot of problems with automatics, and I prefer a manual anyways. Plus, manual is cheaper to buy. And, nobody asks to borrow your truck, and gives thieves a run for their money!

Dude, and I'm saying this in the most respectful way possible, you are not going to learn about model differences, tech tidbits, lifts, tires and everything in one thread in one night. Start reading. Start searching. Take a few weeks or months and learn. Some of us have been doing this for years and it took years to learn!
Good luck man. Just remember to test drive test drive test drive.

Bradshawnh: Thank you very much for all your help: Your advice totally cinched it for me and helped me make the right decision. Today, for the first time in my life, I became owner of a Tacoma, lifelong dream and I'm 60 years old. At about 2pm, I purchased a 2017 TRD Sport, with access cab, long bed and MT. The MT is definitely the way to go for me and I couldn't agree more with your comments. (I hope what you said about lack of interest from thieves is correct!) The access cab is perfect for me because it's just me and my lady and we at least want the option of occassional sleeping comfort. Sorry about some of my infantile questions. Now that I'm an actual owner, I will learn to use the forum search to refine my questions.

hiPSI: Totally understood. No offense intended and none taken. Part of the problem of being new at something is you don't know what questions to ask. Problem is, before this morning I'd never owned a Tacoma; it was only a distant dream. I was trying to get basic information in order to make the right decision for myself. The Toyota website was confusing for a newbie, so I turned to this forum. It was a good decision. Everyone here has been extremely helpful. Thanks for your honest and straightforward advice. That's what it's all about!

Much appreciated. The only other new vehicle I ever bought in my life was a 1976 Ford F-150 straight 6 with 4-speed stick. If memory serves me, I paid $4000, 10 percent of what I paid today. Things have changed. And though I loved that Ford F-150, it was a far cry from the truck I bought today. Thanks for your very appropriate advice about the manual transmission. After test-driving the truck I bought, there was no way I was going to forsake it for an automatic. But at the same time, I totally get those who love the automatics: the young manager of the store almost talked me into it with awesome stories about the Atrac but in the end, I didn't go there and for me, it was the right decision.
