Without knowing the cause of the noise, it's pretty hard to determine that this is a failure waiting to happen. Sure, it's not a normal noise, but to state that it'll grenade is also inaccurate. I'll bring it to the attention of my dealer soon, but for a noise that is sometimes there for me and isn't particularly loud at times, it's just not worth my time. I can hardly replicate the noise certain days and other days I can hear it well. Who knows? Still love driving the truck. And quite frankly, I'm not going to let it bother me. I guess you can lump me into the category of folks who don't regret their purchase.

I am quite sure they know the cause of this noise. They're just not willing to pay for all the repairs that are needed.
My first diff had metal shavings after 400miles. Is that normal? The dealer spoke of that as if it was a sign of failure.
My second diff is slightly quieter. The dealer wouldn't do anything with out Toyota's permission. I received the platinum warranty. Still not happy. I want them to check the diff oil again. Sucks having a new truck with a flawed drivetrain. I have developed an ear for the noise. Swear i can also hear it at low speeds and when hitting bumps in the road.

Yea I go through waves. Right now I'm browsing f150s on CarGurus. I've never owned a vehicle where I spend so much time looking to get rid of it.

Its gonna be real interesting if the 2018s come out and don't have this issue.

That has been a real curiosity of mine also, I have a funny feeling they redesigned the gear set or made some other changes to correct the issue.

Once the '18s come out an army of us need to "test" drive them and come to a consensus for howl or not.

I'm up for it. They'll probably come out before my 20k service I think.

I'm down. The problem though is that some of them take a few hundred miles to start howling.

And if they are howl free Toyota has some explaining to do. There will be no way they can keep their "normal vehicle characteristic" story up.

Seems like it is something they are going to have to address at some point.

How bad would it be to get a crazy strong magnet, 3m glue a thick rubber block to it, and stick it on the diff to see if it dampens the noise...

Yep because them pretending they never said it or that it never existed won't work. Like so many others on here, I just want it to go away. I'm more than willing to forgive and move on - after it's fixed of course.

Is metal shavings in your rear diff oil normal after just 400 miles?

I'm not a mechanic, but I would assume it depends on the amount and size of the shavings.

Yeah. They don't do break in on the gears. That's why they have guidelines for the first 500 miles in the manual.

Well if it was normal, I don't think they would of mentioned the shavings to me or reported them on the work order for the diff replacement.

Must be worse than normal then.
