front end clunk when braking

I have a 2007 Tacoma V6 6spd with TRD it has 55,000 mi, and when I hit the brakes, there is a loud metal like clunk that comes from the front end. I did a search on this here and someone said that its the brakes pads moving in the caliper. I don't believe this is what my truck is doing, it kinda sounds like its coming from the front diff? any ideas?

 

Sounds like your driveline needs to be greased. Look for your zerks on the U-joints on the driveline.there are 5 of them. Pump grease into them. This is using a standard grease gun. This seems to solve most of the reported clunking problems.

 

Actually I've greased the whole driveline within 800 mi and the u-joints are good and plan on changing the diff, transfer, and tranny fluid once I pick up the fluid.

Check the engine mounts.

 

does it make the clunk when stopping in neutral? if not, it may really be the brakes???

its the front brakes making the clunk, it will only do it the first time you step on the brakes in that direction. the pads are a floatig design and move when you step on the brake. its normal!

 

glad i found this thread ive been wondering the same thing for almost 2 years now. my "clunk" only happens the first time i brake in forward or reverse. kinda makes the brakes sound cheap or broken when i hear that clunk. oh well, as long as all is good i reckon

 

I have that same problem... but if i repeatedly brake hard in the same direction it clunks Hard everytime.... and its not because the driveline needs to be greased.... its loud and very obvious... also clunks sometimes just driving down the road.... sometime you dont even have to hit a bump....

 

Has anyone else had this problem.... what was the fix?

Mine does the same. Dealership said not to worry and an independent mechanic said the same. Has to do with the calipers. Usually clunks once and thats it.

 

I added some generous amount of brake grease to the back of the brake pads on the driver side and my clunk is gone. My driver side Icon coilover also had some play in it so I tightened it up and that helped too.

 

TW any other solutions to this. My front end is clunking when i brake and sometimes at a turn. i greased my driveshaft and have tightened every single bolt up front. I just put new rotors, pads, UCAs ( Light racing) and my lower ball joints are strong. I do need new inner tie rods that im about to replace but i certainly dont feel that tie rods are making the clunk. Its quite loud but in so lost at this point. Any Ideas.

 

Mine was doing this right after an allignment last week. Turns out the shop decided to only hand tighten the passenger side lower control arm. Glad it didn't come loose. Coulda been very bad.

 

Mine does this clunk too. Local dealer says it's the brake pads.. I do agree with them, but want it to stop..

Loud clunks when applying the brakes the first time, or when hitting a pot hole.

The clunk is so loud. Yes, only once after fwd or reverse. It’s the brake pads floating, so if you hit a pothole the may loosen out of place - when the brake is applied they’ll be forced back into place. It sure is annoying, and makes it sound like something is very wrong! We spun the tires while the front end was off the ground and watched & listened to it happen. Nothing we can do as far as I know. I think the pins that hold the pads in place wear down over time, just enough for the ‘clunk’ noise to alarm us!
