rubbing compound works well too(by hand, if you use a machine u gonna have a bad time), clay just seems toomuch of a PITA, never got swirls from rubbing either.

Funny seems like a rubbing compound would be more time consuming plus more risky when it comes to scratches and swirls.

Rubbing Compound - applied either by hand or machine - is a very risky proposition. It's considerably more aggressive than even the most aggressive clay. That said, it removes considerably more material (paint) than clay. I never recommend using it unless you really know what you're doing. Oh, and generally speaking, if you use it, you're going to have to use a less aggressive polish to get rid of the defects (swirls) you'll induce with the Rubbing Compound.

Im just sharing my experience with the stuff, never got scratches or swirls so Im not sure if it was my light touch or not an aggressive compound but it worked well. first time it was with my first car which was a heavily oxidized red on a mid 80s car and it did really good. Ive used it since on my 08 civic and 03 Evo both silver and neither had swirling or scratches. But like y'all said, I wouldn't recommend because I'm not a professional

Great if it works for you. On the flip side I have never seen a professional detailer recommend a rubbing compound over a clay bar. The whole purpose of claying is to remove the contaminants from the paint so you don't grind that stuff into the paint when polishing or applying a wax/sealant. Besides you always want to use least aggressive method to get the needed results. I would think a rubbing compound is far more aggressive than clay.

Clay barred and used some poly spray on my white 2005 Lexus last week. It really brought the paint back to what it should look like. Didn't use it on the Tacoma yet , but dealership had it under a tree for a while so I will probably do it soon. Its really not that much work and made a huge difference on the Lexus. Not a great pic but the only one I have from that day. The motorcycle is a whole different thing. I am terrified to get any swirl marks on it. I buy new clothes about once every 6 weeks if I am cleaning it and barely touch it. Very gentle. Even so I still see some swirl marks. Lol

    Is that an Indian?

My VTX is going to get the works done on it before winter. Cleaning between the fins is always the most tedious part. But I've also noticed I have a lot of swirl marks at the base of my tank, right wear my legs touch it. I think a good ceramic coating will help.

Indian Chieftain Elite. Only 350 of them. Hence why I am so careful with the paint.

    Yeah.:D
Its a great motorcycle. I bought a wizards MC cleaning kit That has everything to clean it and seems pretty good. I am not really to uptight with it I bought it to ride it. Has almost 4000 miles on it after 4 months which isn't bad for not leaving Long Island. Usually do a few out of state trips but I have an elderly 13.5 year old puppy that I have to be home for. She is healthy but gets up in middle of night to pee ect. and my wife would freak out if I wasn't here to help her so all trips postponed for a while. Also take her for at least 2 truck rides a day.IMG_20170827_111507.jpg

Also I used mguires scratch X on my kawasaki Meanstreak with those type of swirl marks years ago and it worked pretty well.

Haha. Only the motorcycle in there. The lexus Paint looks great but has plenty of rock chips so it stays outside. That's why I needed the hard top convertible.

Also I found the clay bar much less work than compound.

It takes me less time to clay my truck than to wash it. Can't imagine the work in hand compounding the whole truck lol.

I like the synthetic clays now. Like nanoskin or clay mits. Worth it for sure. Works just as good, can do a car way faster and if you drop it you can wash it instead of throwing it out
