I try to avoid shifting into 1st while moving faster than 4mph. Shifter took about 1 sec to go in this time but Didn't grind or anything. Just want to protect the sychros as much as possible. I'm thinking about swapping to redline MT90.

MT90 is good stuff. Redline Shockproof gear oil is supposed to be even better, although more expensive

Good luck, I tried too but no luck here in LA. I didn't look super hard but the main parts stores (Vatozone, Pep Boys, O'Reillys, etc.) didn't carry it. Had to order it online, found a good price on Amazon a year ago or so

I'll probably order and pick it up at Walmart. Truck is about to cross 4000 miles and I plan doing all maintenance myself.

Thanks for this! It shows R as a shorter gear than first on my 5spd but it definitely doesn't feel like that... I understand the complaints from the 6MT guys on reverse now because it's even worse for them.

This is also what I and everyone I know has also always done, with no issues. My Mom's Outback probably rolled backwards down the driveway in 1st 20 times lol, the parking brake was terrible. Never any damage or issues.

Good Move! There was a story the other day where a lady dropped her Camaro off at the Dealer for an oil change and later she caught them using her car as they were at the drive thru buying food. She video the mechanics and the owner of the dealership said that is not how they usually operate, lol.

I just blip the throttle and get the RPMS up then it goes right in when shifting into first at higher speeds.

hey man, you can start moving in 2nd. many do this in snow & ice, or even a wet road going uphill. sometimes 1st is too low to control wheelspin.

in fact, in Top Gear some years back, Clarkson made a point by starting off a Vette ZR1 (the 700hp or whatever it was) in 6th gear with a MT just to show how much torque it has. and the thing started moving and went all the way up to something like 180 in a single gear from a stop.

one day you'll believe us... you'll be fine!

Starting off in 2nd in the bad snow was always how I could get going before I had 4wd.

I had someone suggest rev up to 2000+ rpm and slip the clutch In second gear if I'm still moving slightly but my muscle memory doesn't permit me to get the revs high enough to avoid growling the engine more than I would like to, the few times that I have tried. I'm just worried about the synchros of first gear.

Only rev to what you have to to make a smooth transition to forward movement considering the conditions you're in. Might be 2K, might be more, might be less, the truck will let ya know what it needs. No sense in slipping the clutch with high rpm if you don't need to.

As for the synchros...they'll let ya know if your doing it right. Finess not force wins the day...if she won't go in, work the throttle a couple hundred rpms and it'll find its way in.

Learn to double-clutch and you'll drop right into 1st from 2nd. In ancient times without a synchro 1st gear, you had to do it. Now, it just makes the synchro's job a whole lot easier.

Is there a known software tune to reduce rev hang. Probably the only thing that annoys me about the truck. Waiting for the revs to drop to shift from 1 to 2 usually ends up with the truck slowing down significantly going up hill creating engine growl and potential lug situations.

Just shift and don't worry about waiting, on my 1 to 2 shift I try to shift quick to avoid loss in RPM's because of the lack of low end power.

What speed/RPMs you usually shift at. On flat ground I usually shift at 11-13mph which is about 2100-2400rpm. If going uphill I'll rev a little higher but sometimes the rev hang kills it and I'm back at 8-9 mph on a semi-steep hill.

Once my truck is warmed up I take 1st gear to around 4k and shift quickly into 2nd to try to keep the revs up.

Holy crap that's high RPMs. You get a clunk when you press the clutch pedal?

With the lack of low end in these trucks it seems like the 1 to 2 shift is the most important, no clunk or noises when shifting.

Just try to experiment with the truck until you find a combination that works for you. When I went from my 2000 Tacoma into my 08 I really noticed the Rev hang but after a few weeks I never even thought of it again and that was 3 Tacomas ago.
