to each their own..... at that point may as well stick an LS in it with a 5 / 6 speed manual of w/e variant. Cus lets face it.... your options for a toyota motor with a manual trans are few and far between.... and lets also face it, the 6 speed behind the 4.0L v6 SUCKS BALLS.

I've always heard some people say it sucks but tbh I've never driven a 6 speed. What makes it suck? Is it just synchros, or is it the ratios?

TOB issues, shitty clutch (if you plan on supercharging it, plan on doing a full fancy URD clutch to handle the power), shitty ratios (first is way to tall, and 6th is not tall enough)

Fair enough, sounds like a subjective matter beside the clutch, which id most definitely replace anyway since I'd be taking the tranny out anyway

Jeez that'd be a tough fit, would love some i6 action but between sourcing motors and replacement parts doe the road that idea gets tough to justify.

Thought about a 1jz as well but I decided fitment issues would also create too many headaches

For as much money as this is going to set you either go new v8 or build and turbo yours the 2.7 really is a limitless platform

I wish I could get a roots blower for it, like I said in an earlier post I don't want insane power just a nice bump with some torquey low end characteristics.

But the most reliable way to do that in my eyes is just replace the motor with another, bigger, proven drivetrain.

It depends on what you're after. It's a hobby so the question of value is subjective. If you want the cheapest upgrade a small block Chevy is the way to do.

FWIW, I have a 1GR-FE + RA60F and I don't think it sucks. The throw out bearing, aluminum pilot thing bugs me. Mine is 78K old now and starting to make the squeak so I'm going to have to deal with it sooner rather than later. The ratios aren't ideal but, I dunno, whatever. I wouldn't keep it if I was doing a swap but I'm also in no hurry to swap it.

What really irritates me is the electronic shift on the transfer case. Goodness I hate that. But different rant.

Anyway, since it's a hobby you'll never justify time and money on this as worth it. So what do you want to do with it? To me going larger than a 4.0L V6 or maybe the 4.7L 2UZ-FE V8 would mean needing to worry about the rear end, too. A 4.7L 3UR-FE would be cool but I'd have to think there's a reason the rear end in the Tundra and Land Cruiser with it are 10.5" and not the little guys we got.

I'm new to engine swaps but I really want to give my 4x4 6 lug 2011 reg cab 2.7 some extra power.

My other off roading buddy really likes the toyota 2.7l i4 and reccomends I just do a turbo. I want to eventually get those steel bumpers I can mount a winch on, front and rear, but I'm afraid the extra weight will just be too much, especially I'm planning on a 3 inch rough country lift (minumum, may end up going all the way to a 6" lift since I always find myself in the rocks).

My main fear is still being underpowered.

As long as we're dreaming a bit. I've always wanted to drop the engine and drive train from a 6 speed FJ into an RC.

That would give you 270hp, 6 speed tranny, permanent all wheel drive with a low range and center and rear lockers

I know this is an old post but someone finally did it. I swapped a 4.0 and 6 speed manual into my single cab.IMG_8068.jpg It really was not very hard at all just took time and a little money. I had a donor truck so it made it extremely easy. Most of it was all plug and play.IMG_8207.jpg As far as it being worth the time and money. Yes it was, it rips through everything now. The power comparison is 1/4 throttle is about how fast it was.
