Front Breaks at 25%

Dealer says front breaks are at 25 percent and I don't need to but can change them. But if I do I'm going to need to change the rotors too - does this make sense?

Should I change them or wait?

Brakes are a wear item so warranty doesn't apply. Changing pads and wear items yourself doesn't impact the warranty on the rest of the brake system either.

So if you are at 40k with 75% used up on pads, you've got another 10k of service left, assuming the same driving technique is used. That actually sounds pretty normal (50k for front pads)

At that point I'd install new pads, scotch bright and brake kleen the rotors, service the calipers, properly bed in the new pads (they will conform to the old rotors just fine) and go another 50k.

This assumes that your rotors do not have any damage or excessively deep grooving, just normal wear.

Myself doing it myself New Pads and Rotors with the out board rotors at 25% I would be installing new

Paying someone I would most likely wait till I had metal to metal wear

You no longer have the 2012 and now have a newer truck??

 

No need to change rotors, unless they are warped (which causes a pulsing brake pedal).
Since there is still 25% lining left, the rotors should not be worn (grooved).

Not sure about the 2012 models, but the first-gen pads are trivially easy to replace.

Nope Still have my 2012 - what led you to that conclusion?

 

A mechanic I know said always ask for measurements and minimum specs as the 25 percent is an estimation and peoples estimations can be very different. Well my Dealership charges 36.95 CND for that - but I did it.

Results:
Front Brake Pads 5mm 42% Rear Shoes 4mm 80% - oddly for that price they didn't measure the breaks or the drums. Still I was told no work required ATM.

Most of you already know this but I also learned you can have your rotors turned instead of replaced if they haven't already been turned.

Slightly worryingly I noticed on the dealership invoice that at the end of the break inspection it says Rear Brakes need service - hoping this is an error, but I will confirm.

 

Service - manager called - explained they just need cleaning and lubricating - if they'd told me that while it was in the shop I likely would've told them to go ahead.

 

Lubricate the brakes? What....

 

Lot of moving parts that should be cleaned lubed regularly. Especially the star adjuster component.

 

Rear Drums? Maybe Bill can expand further
