I spent a lot of my younger years racing dirt bikes in the desert. Now I am 63 years old with a bad back. I have plenty of experience with suspension and consider changing front and rear springs/shocks/coilovers a weekend job, maybe two at the rate I work now. I test rode a 2017 SR5 and TRD Sport crew cabs, V6. My question is how easy is it to make the 2WD SR5 ride as smooth, or smoother, as 2WD TRD Sport? I have a bad back and cannot tolerate rough ride trucks any more. This truck will be high-way only, no off road, no towing, not concerned about weight carrying capacity, do not need the larger TRD tires, and do not want to lift the truck. I would spend the money for a full conversion if the ride is Cadillac smooth on rough highways. But I really hope there is a cheaper solution.

I have already talked with Deaver Springs, King Shocks, Icon. Nobody seems to have a lighter or more progressive rate rear spring. I live Southern California, near those companies. I will be looking around the forum, but would appreciate info if anyone has already done what I am looking for.

There certainly seems to be a lot of different options. There is a set of OR model struts and shocks in the for sale section, but not sure if they are same length as SR5. Even buying new TRD stuff does not seem too unreasonable from a price point. I guess the question is what will be a simple direct swap.

I test drove a few more Tacomas from different dealerships. None rode as harsh as the first one I drove. I suspect the rough ride was because the rear tires were over inflated. In the process, I seemed to have convinced myself that I simply don't need a pick up, but I might change my mind next year.

Seems like any of the better after market shocks can improve the ride on SR5, only question is how much money do you want to spend.
