If you could do it again what trim would you purchase?

You could always have the dealer install some TRD Pro shocks. That's the route I'm going to go after tax returns!

Originally went into the dealership to test drive a pre-owned 16 sport which happened to sell the morning before I went in, talked with the sales manager and ended up taking a look at new 17's. I soon realized the new trucks were only a few thousand more than a certified used 16. After test driving the equivalent truck in both sport and OR (double cab, long bed) I decided for just a few hundred dollars more I might as well go OR, considering I liked the smalled wheels and black fenders.

The only thing I would have added would have been the Prem/Tech package mainly for the parking sensors, coming from a BMW and Benz before this truck you get pretty used to having parking sensors.

Now if only leather was an option in 17 OR

Honestly OP I would go to your local dealer and drive both and compare the price difference, some of the sports had a higher MSRP than the OR's simply because of the added accessories.

 

I think they are fine tires. Everyone that says they are garbage are comparing them to a very aggressive a/t or a m/t. They do everything they were made to do very well. But everyone also had there own opinion.

 

Agreed, the Stock tires on my 17 are way better than the Rugged Fails that came on my 2nd Gens

 

they were ok in rain, absolute garbage in snow. They should put them on the sport factory and put better AT tires on the off road.

 

maybe compared to the older gens but when you consider all the other tires that are of equal value and much better AT. Really don't get why they chose them.

 

I have one of them too. And with the ( only in Canada they say) Manual Tranny. After a Year I'm Also alovin it, and would definitely buy it again.

 

We had one of the worst winters in decades this last year and the stock Goodyears were great in the snow. In fact I purposefully drove outside of the ruts into the deep snow because it was so fun. Granted there are better snow capable tires out there, but I wouldn't call these garbage.

 

I would buy the same rig again. I love the super white, but quicksand does make me look twice. 2017 OR DCab SB AT Premium and Tech Package. I think the stock tires are fine unless you have cash to burn on new rubber before you wear these out.

Oregon I'm guessing gets a similar wet slushy snow to BC? might work for that but the icy winters here in Ontario, they were terrible.

 

I mean.

The thing is, the tires are just like the truck itself, it does everything well but is not the greatest at one individual thing. That's pretty much how it all works. They could've made a tacoma more rock crawler like but then people would complain about on road habits of the truck, etc. etc. I'm just saying. I've had a 2014 trd sport and now the 2017 off road. They both are great trucks. To many people try to hard to find something wrong with everything.

I know the sport tires are bad, had them on a previous work truck, really sucked.
But I was disappointed with the goodyears. maybe cause I've had the duratracs before as well I had higher expectations of the kevlars. I knew they wouldn't be the same as the duratrac, but didn't expect them to be as bad as they really were. Just really disappointed in them as an All terrain as I found as soon as they got any wet dirt not even mud they were useless, and no good for rocks. maybe gravel and grass fine. Guess I just had too high of expectations, but even with their on road I would've expected better considering they weren't good off road.

I won't argue the Toyos are definitely worse though.

Got off topic. Now if I were to buy again. I would choose the trd off road again. If the sport was 2,000 cheaper or more I might consider, but off road has more function for the same price. I had a choice when I bought my 2014 new and went with the sport because everything was paint matched and turn signals on mirrors. Don't like raw plastic because of fading. At the time it was only locking rear and atrac that I would not get. But now that 3rd gen off road has paint match and turns signal mirrors and crawl and mts there's no way I could get a sport. At the same time there all very nice trucks.
