As someone who owned a second gen for nearly 10 years, I can tell you the third gen is better in every way, hence why I'm driving one now.

Well that's good to know. I'm still going to test drive one this weekend to see what's all the hype about.
The only thing I'm disappointed with the 3rd gen is Toyota didn't update the torque with this 3.5L engine. It actually produces 1 lb/ft less of torque than the old 4.0L. They could have chose a different engine like the one in the 5th gen 4Runner but that engine probably would not met CAFE MPG standards.

They seem to have fixed the transmission issues for the most part. It's a touchy subject. There are always those that will not like the way it feels or shifts or handles and that's their opinion.

I had a '17 I bought at the end of Feb. It got totaled. Now I'm driving a '17 OR that I got at the beginning of August.

Many little things that we're issues on the first truck were fixed on the second truck. I've still never had any of the 'big issues', howling diff, not being able to drive up hills ( i think they have fixed the software sufficiently) , etc and the VAST majority of trucks do not have these issues

Granted, I haven't had my '17 long, but I haven't experienced any real issues, aside from my bed being slightly misaligned.

I've had zero mechanical issues. However I've had several cosmetic issues and sound problems.

My door doesn't line up, had paint bubbles, my sun roof was out of alignment (one side stuck up about a 1/4" more than the other side creating wind noise). Also, my speakers rattle with any bass. Also forgot to mention the hood had scratches all over it from factor. Long ones. Along with swirls in the paint. Got paint correction done and that took care of the problem.

However when I'm not having these issues I love the truck.

Hey I paid the admission fee, I have more of a right to be here then some people who have never owned a Tacoma, who own on second GEN Tacoma only or some who might someday possibly buy a Tacoma. As a loyal Toyota customer Who spent their money. I feel it my duty to help others understand what they're getting into with their new Tacoma's and like many others I might possibly buy another one but I'm waiting for what's the excuse that people here use oh yeah disc brakes or Im waiting on a manual transmission in some odd configuration. LOL

Exactly why they are phasing out the 4.0L. I did test drive a new 4Runner back to back after I drove the 2017 Tacoma. It maybe had a bit more low end torque, but definitely not fast. The 2017 Taco felt faster once it got going. Pulled hard in the mid range where the 4Runner dropped off. Just some observations.

When I was buying my 2017 DBLC Sport we had to look through 11 Tacoma's to get one that was 100% complete. Some were missing doors, some were missing engines other had no paint one didn't even exist, Toyota totally forgot to build it! There was just the window sticker laying on the ground in a parking stall.....Sheesh the QC is terrible

Are you implying that Tacoworld is not a great representation of the entire Tacoma community?

While I'm overall happy with our 2017 TRD OR there we're some little glitches:

    1. Fender flares not properly attached.
    2. Shift knob loose.
    3. Rear wheel well liners not properly bolted down.
    4. Scratches on front A pillar
I took care of one through three. Dealer ordered and installed new pillar. Gave me a second tank of gas for my troubles.

We buy my wife a new car every couple of years. Glitches like this are not uncommon. I've got no howl, no rattles, it shifts fine and we enjoy driving it.

I've been on a few car/truck forums. There's always a wide swath of owner experiences. There's always a group that has no regrets and another subgroup that repeatedly shares their bad experiences. Then you have fanboys of the various model iterations and take glee when the latest model has issues. I've been in all camps.

It's easy to get bittered up when you've spent a lot of money and your expectations have not been met.
