LSD + Locking Diff options

I know this has to be on here somewhere and I read a few threads similar to what I'm asking but couldn't really find a direct answer, so if one is on here feel free to point me to it!

I have an 06 2wd with the LSD.

I pretty much drive on pavement but want the option to lock the rear diff if I am ever in an offroad situation.

What's the most economical way to accomplish this? When I say economical i don't mean "cheap". I do mean cost effective for what I'm trying to accomplish. I don't go offroad hardcore like most on here. Just want the option to lock up the rear on command. I really don't want the burden of installing a compressor either.

Suggestions?

And is it possible to accomplish this and still maintain the functionality of the LSD for daily driving?

 

shoulda got trd,,maybe you can get the E-locker on yours?

 

It is TRD, just not the offroad b/c i don't go offroad.

Ironically enough i had an 06 off road before this truck and totalled it. It had the rear locker.

ohh/....yea you might be able to get the stock e locker off an offroad, but itll prolly be expensive..

 

from what i've read i would have to replace the whole rear axle to utilize the stock toyota locker.

can anyone verify this?

 

You can't have the LSD and a locker in the same differential on a 2006 truck.

The LSD carrier needs to be removed to install a locker. You also need to remove the LSD carrier if you want to put a lunchbox locker in.

There is no real cheap & easy way to put a locker in your truck.
Options?
1) Remove LSD carrier. Install ARB carrier, gear setup, air compressor, air lines, etc.
2) Remove LSD carrier. Find OPEN carrier and install lunchbox locker (spider gears). Gear setup because of the open diff.
3) Remove LSD carrier. Install some other type of locker that will require gear setup.
4) Find TRD e-locker 3rd member - I don't know the details, but probably still just as expensive as the above options.

You realize - once again - you'll have to get rid of the LSD?

Doesn't the LSD give you enough traction? Why do you want to get rid of it?

 

Shit. I think I'll stick with the LSD. To be quite honest, I have not had a problem with traction yet, just thought this would be a good project I would like to control the rear and lock it when I want to instead of relying on the truck to "sense" how it needs to distribute power. (and yes i know there are ways to "trick" it into doing what you want with the e brake and all) guess i'm just a control freak!

 

From the sound of your needs the LSD should be sufficient... if not, invest in a towstrap and a come-along hand winch.

 

If you haven't found yourself in a situation where you have said "Shit-I can't go any farther without a locked rear end" then don't worry about a locker right now.
I've gotten my sport thru plenty of places/obstacles without issue...Someday I'll lock it...but right now I can spend the cash on something else.

 

Thats what I was thinking...you can do it right sometime down the road when loot doesn't matter much.

 

nuff said. I'm good with what i've got. I've got that "bug" to work on the truck lately. This weekend is coilover install, AAL re-install (after TSB) and grillcraft install

The reason I got started on this was that I thought the salvage yard still had my 06 that was previously totalled (it had the locking rear diff). I was going to try and pickup the entire rear end from them, but it's gone......Then I got this urge to just find a way to lock the back.

These urges are why Visa loves me!

Sell it and get a new truck with 4WD and a locker!!!

lol...i would love a 4x4 but honestly don't really need one. it's one of those things that would be great to have but a little unnecessary for me. when it's actually time to get rid of mine i will definately get a 4x4 but for now i got what i got (and she's only got 50k on her).

besides, i have to buy the wife a new lexus before i get a new truck

 

Or just go to junk yard, find transfer case, electronics front diff and convert your truck to 4x4
better yet put solid axle o n the front

 

Umm...... it's cheaper to go with his original idea of putting a locker in the rear.

 

yeah, I'd really like to just swap the entire rear end out with a stock tacoma's that had the e locker.

i'll probably just keep checking the local salvage yards for one and try to do some haggling.

 

Toyota is making deals now... get a 2010 Off Road TRD 4WD... and have the best of all worlds, even if you don't go off road... now you can if the desire is there!

 

yea but that will be still 2wd even with the locker...

 

Just put the parking brake on 2 clicks to lock it up when needed....
