Quality control issues on 2017 models?

My '17 TRD DCSB with 8200mi. Starting to seep oil from rear diff housing. There's a couple of paint flaws 1 on the hood and 2 on the door.
My Co worker bought same model but in blue. I spotted 1 paint flaw on the hood. Pointed it out to him he was a bit bummed. Then I told him I couple also and he felt a little better.

 

I admit you got me at the first issue haha.

17 DCSB auto OR. I have 2 minor issues. Driver door has a rattle, I think its a cable inside the door hitting the door when jostled. And the second one is my driver front brake squeaks on stopping. I plan on having the squeak addressed at the next service.

Honestly, if it weren't for TW, i'd have no idea that there were the complaints that there are. I have no howling, no erratic shifting, nothing.

 

Forgot to mention my brakes are squeaking at slow speed or coming to complete stop.

Ok guys... just for a full perspective... I may or may not be part of the team responsible for warranty failure analysis for the largest automotive parts manufacture for North American vehicles. I review multiple matrix just like these attached showing failure trends for all sorts of components. Never and I mean NEVER is the Tacoma ever near the top of these lists. Usually at the very bottom. Sure there are some small issues here and there but in the realm of things the Tacoma (Any gen) is one of the highest quality and most durable vehicles made. This isn't an opinion. It's data. Lots and lots of data.

Haha. That is actually for Blower Motors. Dumb girls (crv is a girl car) dump armorall down the HVAC intake and the vapors bind with the hot commutator surface in the motor resulting in failure. Silicon is the contaminate.

 

I feel like 17's are better. There is well know member on here. The way he talks about his truck being problematic. I haven't heard anyone with 17 have problems like he has with his truck. .

Ummmm. 2017 is exactly the same truck. Other than a cps and hood glue on very early units they are the same. You even have the howling holes in the lca's in 2017, it's just whiners have stopped complaining.

2017 DCSB OR with 6000miles and only issue is my rear leaf springs squeak the instant any road dirt or dust gets on them. There is a thread about this and it's not very popular, therefore I'm going with I got unlucky

I have a '17 TRD OR and have as many others, shared that every Toyota has idiosyncrasies and problems that arise, but none have affected my truck getting me to or from anywhere. My tune on this truck has changed dramatically in the last 13,000 miles from being very pleased with it, to still liking the truck but not being able to stand what has become of Toyota service.

Toyota Corporate by all appearances has gotten into micro-managing dealers in an effort to cut the fat out of warranty work. They force dealer service into telling customers things are "normal" even when they know they aren't - the service advisors and managers hate having to toss people out knowing they could have fixed something, so they are unhappy. The dealers then have to stuff their shops with routine service like tire rotations, oil changes, air filter replacements, etc. that they have fast turnaround, cheap labor, and big margins on in order to keep their department profitable.

Case in point: In 2012 my 2nd Gen Tacoma had a hum and vibration coming from the rear end. They drove it, inspected it, and made the decision in under 30 minutes to replace my rear axle. I was on my way in 3 hours after drinking a few coffees and eating cookies in the lobby with a truck that was right as rain. Very happy camper. A few months later a recall came out for some rear leaf springs so I scheduled an appointment 2 days out, they had parts in stock, and I was in and out in 2 hours. So the truck had some problems, sure, but the way it was handled wasn't painful and quickly forgotten.

Fast forward to 2017: Appointment #1 at dealer for bad rear diff, they acknowledge the rear end whine and clunking in my rear diff is weird, and they open a case and call technical service. They are told its a "normal characteristic" by tech line and can't do anything more as Toyota won't pay them for the work. They forget to look at, or even grease my creaking clutch pedal, so when I tell them they forgot the service advisor frantically grabs some silicone spray and proceeds to spray everywhere under my dash. Clutch still creaks loudly. Appointment #2 to address whine, clunk in rear end and clutch pedal creaking, they call TAS again without even test driving the truck. I am told they can't even bill for the test drive time unless its approved. They spray clutch pedal again with silicone spray. Still creaks. I am told TAS says the clunk is a "Normal characteristic", and dealer says their hands are tied despite wanting the work. Third appointment today...can almost guarantee its the same response.

If this was 5 years ago, the dealer would have said "yep, we know what it is. Your warranty covers it." and gone to work, and I'd be back on the road having forgotten about it already. Now they have to find 10 different ways to politely tell you your problem isn't actually a concern, because they can't bill for ANYTHING unless Corporate tells them they will pay them back. You can't have technicians make $40-100 an hour and not bill their time to someone, or you'll go broke in a hurry. It's a catch 22.

Tacoma's are still great trucks and Toyota produces some good stuff, just know what you're getting into with trying to get work done.

 

A lot of the issues I've noticed people bring up here, have a lot to do with not knowing exactly what they got into. The offroad package especially will not behave like you're used to with most any other package or model of truck. It's geared low, has a lot of backlash at the rear diff, and the manual transmission can exacerbate all the weird noises they can make if you have one.

Me and a coworker were talking about selling our purpose built offroad rigs. People will buy them because they look cool. They do not drive like you think they will, doesn't mean it's broken. His built Samurai was back on Craigslist a week later.

More often than not, the problems people do have are a complete non issue that they either blow out of proportion or just don't understand what it's doing in the first place and really isn't anything.

For example, "diff howl". I hear a driveline spinning at the right speed to hear over everything else. And even then it's hard to differentiate from road noise. My girlfriend is also an automotive technician like me... she doesn't hear anything. I've heard the same noise for years and years on everything else I've driven built like this, she hasn't driven anything like this. Gears and bearings are not silent when they spin, it's -excessive- noise like a jet engine taking off that suggests an issue.

 

Interesting perspective and to some extent sad. I have to wonder if corporate had some shady dealerships making claims on work they never completed just to stay afloat and hence leading to this type of policy.

My dad has a 2016 DCLB TRD OR and he had rust starting on the beds spot welds behind the cab! Toyota Cooperate came to our local Toyota dealer to look at it themselves. They did fix the problem. I am not exactly sure what they did weather it was body work or replaced the bed. The original bed was also misaligned which they fixed during this experience.
