Is this rust anything to worry about?

Bought this truck recently and noticed some rust on the underside. These are a few pictures I took of the underside while inspecting the front end for squeaks. It seems to be surface rust but I wanted a second opinion. Could I hit it with a wire brush to slow it down?

On another note if anyone has some advice on how to remedy the squeaky front end I would appreciate it. Only squeaks when going over speed bumps.

Squeaking is typically a bushing so check those for cracks and/or damage.

 

Yea thats what I thought. the rest of the frame is surprisingly good though which is crazy.

What kind of paint? Like a rust sealer?

I'm assuming that involves brushing off the surface rust, applying the paint and that's it?

 

Would applying grease to these bushings help? or would they need replacing if there are a few cracks? Look like most of the bottom has some dry rot areas on the bushings.

 

Not bad at all.

Actually wire brushing it will remove it, but won't stop it nor slow it down. Grease is what you need. It will prevent rust from progressing and coming back

if you want to paint it, remove as much loose rust as possible and be sure to use a rust killer/converter before applying the paint, as painting over rust doesn't stop it. Then grease your frame

As I said, painting over rust doesn't stop it. It hides it, but rust keeps progressing and worsening under the paint, unseen to the eye, untill the paint peels off or bubbles and you have to remove it all and start all over again.. Or worse, untill holes appear in your frame...

 

Thank you! Is there a specific brand of rust kill that you recommend? I found the POR15 and will do some research with how to apply and prep.

Wire brush it good. Then if you want it to look pretty POR15... then later on Fluid film it to really protect it.

Or just wire brush and FF it. Done. It will stop any more rust. Reapply it once a year. As a bonus it keeps excess mud and dirt from sticking though some dust will naturally coat the FF.

 

Sorry, but that kind of thinking gets all these trucks rust the frame to shit.

@Dangorah yes, worry about it and take some action now, before few years from now you will start "another frame rust" thread. You can take care of that rust (meaning stop it from progressing) with few cans of fluid film for example. Keep in mind the rust will not go away nor will stop on its own. Preventive maintenance is required in "rust subject" for these trucks.

By the way fluid film is also good for removing squeaking of rusted parts rubbing at each other. Can't go wrong with fluid film. 50 bucks invested in 5 cans from Lowes (https://www.lowes.com/pd/Fluid-Film...osion-Preventive-Penetrant-Lubricant/50335157) will pay out in long run.

 

No specific brand, but it has to be phosphoric acid

 

I think you guys in the US have something called Ospho, which is phosphoric acid

 

Amazing advice. Sounds like I have 2 directions I can go

1)

- wire brush off the surface rust
- apply fluid film

Optional: Paint with POR15


2)

- wire brush off the surface rust
- apply Ospho


Optional: Paint with POR15

 

Id also paint over the ospho once it dries completely. it pretty much just leaves bare metal.
