245/75/16 vs. 265/75/16

Looking at a set of Toyo Open Country A/T for my 4x4 Taco with 16" stock steel wheels. It came with Dunlap 245/75/16. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to go to the wider 265s? I plan to keep the stock wheels. Would you stay with the original size? Why or why not?

 

I "upgraded" to the 265s from the 245s and noticed a power loss and mpg loss....It looks better though

 

Like tmat said, 265s look so much better because they fill in the wheel well, but if you're concerned about mileage you might want to stick with a smaller size. You could also look into lighter tires- the toyos i've heard are a pretty heavy tire so even if you stayed with 245s you might suffer a mpg loss.

 

Good point, the 265s would look better but mpg may suffer. I'm curious to how much? If more than a couple of miles it may be worth it to stay with the 245s. Also, is Traction Control affected with different tire size? Thanks for your help.

 

265/70R16 is similar to 245/75R16 (stock 31"). If you upgrade to a 265/75R16 (32" tire) mileage will suffer a little, but will look better in my opinion. Fill the wheel wells more.

 

Although I've had the TSB springs added, I do not plan on adding a lift kit. The 245s work good but just appear to be small in the wheel wells. If gas mileage is not significantly affected and there are no rub problems then the 265 may be one of those easy modifications that will enhance the appearance without affecting or maybe even enhance the functionality of the truck. I bought the 4X4 to actually use it in the deer woods. We hunt in a low area with lots of river bottom mud and the wider tire and more aggressive tread would seem better suited. However, street use will still predominate.

 

Get the 265 70 16s as the one person said they are virtually the same height. There is really no mpg loss. Mine came with the 245s and I went with nitto terra grapplers at 265 70 16 and have not noticed any mpg loss. If it was it would be 1/2 mpg which the looks componsate for. I use mine hunting as well so I hear ya on mud and sticky situations. Good luck

 

I'm guessing the 70 vs 75 has to do with how tall the tire is? If so would the 265/70/16 be shorter than my current 245/70/16? Perhaps this would give the width I'm wanting, filling the wheel well better.

 

I kept mine the same, 245/75/16 Dunlop to 245/75/16 Wrangler Silent Armors A/Ts. The tread on the stock dunlop tires seemed more highway. I liked the look of All Terrains & its on road handling improved so much over the stock tires which was important to me. A bonus was the 245s were less expensive than the 265s. The mpg really didn't come into the equation. I do not notice the wheel well nor do they look small on the truck imo I might feel differently when I put on my 5100s. Definitely do what feels right for you, that is what is important & if you not happy going into it, you will just spend more $ down the road. That is my experience.

They are almost the same in heigth but you will get a bit wider stance. Maybe from this pic you can tell. It does fill the wheel well better

I switched from 245 to 265-75-16. I noticed about 1/2 a MPG difference. But it may be my driving. I still get around 18 here in town. I do alot of hunting and towing (worse gas MPG when towing). What ever 256 series tire you get, get the lightest one you can. I got the Hancooks.

 

I decided to go with Michelin LTX MS2's in a 265/75/16 size. (black walls out) Tirerack.com gives them a pretty decent rating. I have always had excellent overall performance, and very comfortable ride and great handling with Michelins.

I will have them installed this afternoon. And will post pics after install.

These tires are awesome, just about equal to floating on a cloud with the Billy's set @ 0 and Eibach coils. Very quiet and handle outstanding.(no rubbing at all) The larger tire size seems to have leveled the truck. (or maybe its just my eyes playing games)

This about finishes my humble build. I now have the truck the way I want it. Got the MR2"s for $624.00 otd life time bal/rotate this includes the Michelin $70.00 rebate which ends Saturday 03/06/10. They gave me $200.00 for the OEM Dunflops.

 

Thanks for the great help and pics. The 265/70/16 does fill the wheel well better. Keep the pics/opinions/experience coming, it definitely helps.

Those really look nice! Your truck looks as if you could put a level on it and it would put the bubble in perfect center. Michelins would be very hard to beat for ride quality. Your pics give me a really good idea of how the 265/75/16s will look. If I had it to do all over again, I would get your color. Nice truck!

 

Your truck is equally nice. It appears that there is more side wall with the 265/70/16 but that the 265/75/16 is slightly taller. I will definitely decide between these two sizes. Does not appear you could go wrong with either.

I very happy with the stance and will most likely not do the TSB or AAL. I really like the ride just the way it turned out. The long wheel base has alot to do with the smooth ride as well. The tires really compliment the Eibach coils and Billy's on all four corners. Like glass out there on the superslab.

Any new thoughts/comments since you've been driving on them for awhile? Notice a difference in loss of power/acceleration/mileage?
