Engine braking

I don't know if it's just me but do you guys feel engine braking in 3rd gens? In other cars and trucks you let go of the gas and the car keeps going, slowing down gradually. On the 2017 taco it seems like once you let go of the gas it immediately starts slowing down. Any way to prevent it?

 

I'm not sure to engage engine braking, but there must be something specific because my truck doesn't do it every time.

 

I really like the engine braking feature.

Similar to driving stick and downshifting. Thinking it saves me wear and tear on the brakes.

Don't see it discussed too much on TW though.

 

shove it in N for 2 seconds shove it back in D...that will disengage a lot of the engine braking
for the current downhill...until you do something like add throttle or hit the brakes

at least that's how it's done on 2nd gens like my 2013

 

The braking is ok for when coming to red lights but when driving on the highway and you let go for a second it drops 5-ish mph

 

normal. don't take foot completely off gas on highway then it won't happen. who does that ?

 

Try using the cruise control on the highway instead, then you don't have to hold the gas pedal down.

 

DFCO, deceleration fuel cut off. Pretty much everything has it now. It's part of why we get 20mpg instead of like, 12.

 

My taco did that exact same thing and my 4runner does similar, except instead of just losing speed it lets rpms rise instead of going into the next gear. Like it self prohibits moving to a higher gear. I think it's called grade logic or something like that. All forms of engine braking I guess, helps save brake wear, so it suits me just fine!

 

I guess it's there for a purpose I just hate that letting off the gas makes it decelerate so quick. Can't cruise down an exit ramp or to a red light

 

Part of it is wind resistance; you've got a brick with a parachute on the front, so when you let off of the gas on a level surface it's going to immediately start slowing down. It's not usually as obvious with cars because their body designs tend to be slipperier than trucks and so their wind resistance is much lower.

On a downhill slope, it'll downshift if you step on the brakes to aid in stopping. Even if you just lightly touch them. It's made more intrusive by having the truck in tow/haul mode, since it assumes you're stopping a trailer too.

 

Mine seemed to do it sporadically. Then it stopped altogether. The only down shifting I notice now is, when slowing down, it will downshift at 1000 RPM. My guess it's doing that because the motor would probably bog and stall if you needed some power quick below 1000 RPM.

 

My truck does it to, going down hill it will slow down rather than coast. Doesn't make sense to me. I would think mpg would increase if the truck would coast, at least coast downhill.

 

Brake pads, rotors, shoes, fluid, and drums are Much cheaper than a transmission rebuild.

 

According to top gear, newer vehicles (since the late 90s) don't use fuel when engine braking. So technically you'd get worse mileage when coasting because you burn some fuel at idle.

 

I pointed out that fact around here once... I was promptly shit on by at least 3 people.

 

And here on my MT truck, I find the engine braking extremely lacking, it runs away on hills, off roading, and when coming to a stop you can literally feel the fuel cutoff as it feels like the truck shifted itself to nuetral it just feels like it free wheels

 

At 'coasting' you are moving, thus getting great MPG.

At idle you are sitting still, so you get 0 MPG.

 

They must have never shelled out thousand of dollars to have their transmission rebuilt due to using it as a brake.

 

Good for the motor too. I click mine over into S and do it myself fairly often.
