Pin hole in CV boot

I have a pin hole in my outer CV boot my cvs are basically new I have about 1500mi/3weeks on them. Is there anything I can use to "patch it. I've contacted cvj to see what they suggest as that's where I got the cvs from.

 

Just drop a dap of rubberized paint on it and call it good, by dap i mean drop off the end of a tooth pick

 

I took my taco in for an alignment after my lift and the shop told me the same thing. Can some one explain to me why this is such a huge deal.

 

i wonder how well a bicycle tire patch would work on that, might be worth a shot

 

Grease slinging out. Water dirt getting in.

I mean if you dont care about the mess it makes itll probably go a long long time without giving you problems but it is going to make a mess if just slowly.

I guess it depends on the size of the hole too. The OPs hole is minimal, he probably wont see any mess.

 

That little dot in the top center of picture on the inner side of the cv where you wiped clean?

It wont rub anything so clean it with a dab of solvent and a rag and smear a dab of rtv on it.

 

Is that on the outside or inside boot? Just curious.

Joking. Hey Dan. I'd just do either like others are saying and put some rubber sealant, he'll, I bet a tire plug n rubber cement would do the trick. Or replace the boot. It's really easy to replace the boot, don't even have to pull the CV from the axle.

 

Haha. You'll have to come back to PA to get it. It's slightly more modded than the last time you saw it. Just hit 200000 mi two weeks ago. Yeah I'm thinking of cleaning it and putting a dab of black rtv on it. It's so small I doubt anything will get in it but I don't want to take a chance.

 

Man throw some RTV on that and forget about it

Seriously though, RTV. It's a very small hole, but better safe than sorry!

 

I see you got a few more things done to it, lookin good Dan. Yeah, RTV ought to do ya good.

 

I used RTV and it is leak free for 10k miles.

 

+1 for RTV, but get the surface prep right before you do it. Get the surface free from oil and buff it a little with sand paper. Also, have the crease in the boot expanded as much as possible when you apply it.

I know it sounds like a half-assed fixed, but it will buy you some time anyway. And it beats replacing the boot.

 

I ran with RTV patching a small tear, not much bigger than that pinhole, in the CV boot for 40,000+ miles. Was still holding when I sold it.

 

boot sealant works wonders. i've used it on my 2015. been two years and havent had a single issue. just a little dab is all it takes.

 

Is there a writeup somewhere for just boot replacement?

 

I don't know. But, what I did was undo the clamp at the boot attached to the diff, then pull that boot back. Then the brake caliper gets removed and hung in the wheel well, pull the rotor, disconnect the ABS wire til it's only attached to the UCA, two bolts on bottom of spindle come out, disconnect tie rod from spindle, disconnect UCA from spindle. At this point spindle should be free from the vehicle, and you can pull it out with the CV while the CV hub stays inside the diff. At this point the only thing preventing you from sliding both boots off is the bearing assembly at the end of the CV that was on the diff side. There is only a C clip holding it in, remove that, pull the bearing assembly off and now you have access to both boots. In toyota's boot replacement kit, they give you a new C clip along with boots, clamps, n grease. Installation is easier than removal.
