hey guys, having some trouble with my brakes. Hydraulic disks. all of a sudden (haven't ridden in a while so between the last ride and this one) it feels like the pressure in the lines increased 10 fold. the back brake locks up the tire completely. I released some fluid and pressure and it was fine for a while, then after letting her sit for a while again it happened again. any ideas? does this happen normally on hydraulic brakes? this is my first set of brakes like this.

Sram can be finicky, you can have an air bubble still in the system that settles when it sits

Wouldn't that be at the top of the system where the bleed screw is on the actual lever? I cracked that and only fluid came out. then it was fine for a while and it did it again.

Old SRAM/Avid brakes are infamous for sucking. Don't go back to cable, just invest in a nice set of newer hydros such as Avid Guides or Shimano XTs and as long as you service once a year you won't have issues.

:anonymous: it may have been a couple of years without service... what year models are you classifying as "older" models? I got these in 2014.

I was wondering the same about what's conisdered "old"? I have some Avid's from 2010. Servicing them is kind of a pain. This last time was probably the only time it's actually gone like it should and it only took 1 attempt for each brake. WHen switching to Shimano XT's, do rotors need to be swapped as well?

Not always it by the caliper, like others have said sram/avids can be a bitch to bleed

I'd say that makes sense, but it doesn't. why have the bleeder screw near the lowest point. and what have I been "bleeding" with haha.

2010 is old. Around 2014/2015 SRAM really invested some time in their new brakes and made them competitive with Shimano. The old stuff is just clunky and proprietary. No need for new rotors. Check out PinkBike for solid used deals. I wouldn't go any less quality than Deore, therefore Deore, XT, Zee, Saint, and XTR (priced respectively) are all excellent.
