There referring to the basic inherent drum brake flaws , it could possibly be worse on Toyota because of the tighter tolerances.

Hahaha. This was a hilarious read. You claim to know the sport, yet when your truck won't move your solution is to engage locker and force it to move. Sounds like the only thing you know is which side the skinny pedal is on. A real wheeler lays on the ground and fixes problems. If things break on an offroad rig, it's usually due to finding the weakest link. Not stupidity.

Is 4WP going to install your D60 too?

Normally its because of freezing weather, drum brakes especially are susceptible because they are not good at draining away water. So if you offroad, get them wet, then set the parking brake overnight in freezing temps you'll wake up to them literally frozen and won't be able to release the brakes. Which is why its recommended to not set your parking brake when in freezing temps. This isn't a Tacoma thing it happens to all vehicles.

second most common is someone messed up installing new shoes, drum brakes can be tricky and we see people bring in trucks all the time with rear brake problems after trying to do them themselves or having their personal mechanic mess something up. Its not hard.... if you know how to do it.

Lastly there is just straight mechanical failure either from bad parts or factory defect, Smitty probably thinks this is the most common but in reality its super rare. Never seen it happen to a Tacoma and I worked at a Toyota dealership for 5 years.

you guys, I bumped this thread in spite.. This is an old old thread and the OP hasn't been on in a while.

I was making a joke because you have people get on here claiming to be up for engine swaps, axle swaps, and so forth. When really they just wanna talk about how cool the idea of it is.

Which it is cool and fun to talk about, but should be in a different subform not here.

I haven't had it off road in freezing temps but I wonder if this is the case here in general in the winter.

I know last winter I still used e brake all the time I parked as its habit for me.
Never had an issue. I have had issues right after washing where a rear wheel would stick thinking from rust. not to the point it wouldn't move but you could feel/hear it break free as soon as I pushed the gas. I have fixed this issue by just driving it around the block and giving a slightly harder brake pressure just to help clear out the water and heat them up a little to dry them out.

I'm in ontario, so we get cold ass winters. but I've never had an issue.

Yeah I wouldn't say its necessary to not use your parking brake, just recommended especially if you're in the middle of nowhere just as a precaution. I know people do it all the time and don't have the problem (my GFs family is from Minnesota and they always use their parking brakes without issue). But every year up in mammoth I see it happen to at least one or two tourists, usually letting the car warm up and hitting it with a mallet does the trick. That's where I learned as a teenager to not set the parking brake as its what all the locals told me (given this was in like 2001 so trucks back then probably were more susceptible)

I know its definitely more likely to happen if you just offroaded and you're more likely to have water inside the drums. Have no idea why but maybe altitude is also a factor as I also saw it was common practice to not set the brake when I was in Breckenridge whic is at like 9,000ft... mammoth where it is also "common knowledge" is 8,000ft.

A bent shaft to a D60? A D60 is overkill even for 35s and we aren't even rock crawling. Our trucks don't have the tires, gears, or HP to justify a 60

You're assuming that this guy can't... He says he has experience on Jeeps. Maybe he doesn't want to, and want to buy some stronger than a JY part that had an actual warranty so it's covered. I see nothing wrong at all.

I've thrown JY shafts in my bronco, only to have them break, so I am out of time, money, and a lot of frustration tearing down the front end of an old TTB truck....

From the sounds of his Jeep he likely did all bolt on as well. I wouldn't call that experience.

Is that an issue? Do we as enthusiasts now snub those who buy things because it's not built?

Off road community is supposed to be relaxed, chill and fun... Take that snobby shit to the street scene and you can be judged by the cost of your rims, chrome and amount of camber...

Just making an observation that buying a bunch of overkill bolt on stuff from 4WP does not make you experienced.

If he uses it and wheel his rig, who cares?

Well that's the discussion. If you don't like it, move along.

Edit: offroad community is chill, relaxed and fun but this thread has a lot of red flags to me. From my perspective OP builds are overkill because he doesn't know how to wheel.

I think the 'using rear locker and 4lo to break a frozen wheel free' was clear enough he really doesn't have much experience off roading or understanding what to do on a trail in general.
