My own experience with this phenomenon it is more common when the truck is first started (engine cold) will do this in my case about half the time when first shifted to R from park, and again park to Dr. seams to clear up as the engine /trans warms up. I live in Plano Tx and Toyota just moved there Corporate headquarters hear.
I am thinking that when one of there Management employees is killed by this elusive trait in the busy traffic here. They will take a closer look at it.

Odds are like others have said its the nanny controls trying to save us all. Never had that before but my last truck was a 02 Ranger.

I got used to this with the turbo lag in my F250, it was really noticeable, even with mods.

My guess would be traction control kicked in.

This is normal by Toyota, one of my bigger issues with the truck. Never had this problem on any other car or truck I've owned. Had a tech ride a long with me while I had them check out a list of other issues when I went in for 10k service.

Partially a delay to to the electronic throttle to keep from "dangerous" acceleration, however it will also cut out if you even slightly spin the wheels. To me this is a lot more dangerous.I have gotten to the point where I can consistently recreate the issue which is apparently not an issue nor is my massive shift flare from 2nd to 3rd. Toyota "quality" am I right...

I'm calling BS here. Drive ANY older vehicle cold that's not fuel injected and that happens. Those had throttle cables. Vehicles are not perfect... none of them.

my experience with the 17 taco auto - the truck HATES "punching" the throttle. If you don't "roll on" the throttle in a controlled manner something will cut your power. Traction control, various other nanny systems...idk. BUT when you roll on the throttle in a controlled manner quickly, the auto finds your gear ( which takes a second if not from a complete stop) and then GOES, hard. 17 dcsb trdOR

It's happened on mine as well, it almost feels like the truck is midshift or gear hunting so there is no where for the power (or lack there of) to go.

It's not exclusive to the Tacoma, drive accordingly.

Hondas do it too. That is why you have a button that you can disengage the traction control. It has nothing to do with "dangerous" and everything to do with not having wheel slip. Think snow covered roads and getting moving from a stop. Think going into a rain soaked turn too hot and getting into an oversteer condition.

Where this is a problem is getting started on an ice covered hill and you need to spin a bit to gain momentum. You have to turn it off or you never get going!

I've had this often foot slips off pedal .. but I think it's the toyota design of the gas pedal about 6" off the floor to avoid floor mat unintentional acceleration.

OP did not say his vehicle was cold. I experienced the same EXACT thing today turning left through a busy 4 lane intersection. I was 19.5 minutes into a 20 minute commute. My truck was fully up to temperature for at least 15 minutes. The interaction between throttle/ecu/engine-trans on this Truck IS a problem. Toyota KNOWS this, which is why they have released two ECU programming updates since 2016...it's still not correct. :(

My sisters accord does it really bad but the Scion xB I drive for work has never done it (neither did the past 2) my 4.0 auto hasn't ever done it. But I drive my 5 speed 99.9% of the time because I know the autos can do it.

Only if you can't tune a carburetor. Carburetor "buck" and sudden vacuum loss are amateur mistakes.

That what my '16 Tundra feels like when traction control kicks in. A light flashes on the dash when this is happening.

FL no snow here... lots of rain kinda learn how to drive in it. This is this truck, I've never owned a Honda. 1963 Nova had a similar feel with a carburetor not getting fuel. 1977 Camaro LT swapped with a built tranny wasn't an issue also broke the wheels loose every time it shifted to second, no problem in the rain and no traction control there buddy... 2002 Wrangler not a problem, 2006 Silverado not a problem, 2012 Silverado not a problem, 2013 Camaro not a problem, 2002 Miata (Stick shift) not a problem, 2014 Silverado not a problem, 2002 Tundra not a problem, 2016 Tundra not a problem.

Never had another car or truck ever do this. It is an issue.

Would the Pedal Commander device help with this issue?

Maybe we are talking about two different things... VSC is always active and has the ability to retard the throttle in a wheel slip condition. That is what I am talking about. Everywhere can't be Florida. Some people have to drive on slick roads. Maybe they can make a special "Florida Edition" Tacoma that comes with no traction control and pontoons...
