At the risk of this being posted elsewhere, I really need to ask...

I'm going to do the rear diff breather mod to allow for worry-free river and stream crossings. Nothing too hardcore, I just need to know I'll be okay if the depth comes up to the doorsills. To that end, are there any other breathers I should do? Specifically, the front diff and or transfer case. I won't need to do the air intake snorkel 'cause I won't be going that deep. Thanks for your input.

On a side note, my learning curve is in a steep incline and pulling several Gs. To quote the mighty Joe Walsh "I'm an analog man" and the 21st century technology built into these new Toyotas is both mind blowing and somewhat overwhelming.

    Cheers, Jules

I've watched all the threads on this since the third gen came out and I still have questions. I don't believe there are any other breathers to mod but my question relates to the breather itself. some of the instructions I've seen say to just relocate the old breather or to use a part that I think is just a one way valve, which is what we're trying to avoid. I'd like to see something definitive on this.

Hate to be that guy but a Google search or a forum search would answer these questions. It's okay, though, because you are new.

The front diff already has a breather tube that is run up by the wheel well. The front breather is a two way breather and the consensus is that the rear should match. If the breather only lets air out, when a hot diff hits cold water, it could still create a lot of suction, which would suck dirt and water through all the seals. I have purchased my parts but I haven't installed them yet. When I do, I plan to run the breather up behind the left taillight like another member did (cant remember his name). That way, it is out of the way unlike if you route it into the bed storage compartment.

All factory ones are vents. Not actual breathers.

Had it confirmed when I did mine. So you should do all of them.

When you say vent you mean a one way valve, right?

Correct. Meant to vent air when it gets warm. Not sure how it gets air back in after but yes.

Theres also to electronics that have breathers going up

Are all the front breathers above the passenger front wheel well?

I found two very informative, yet simple instruction videos on extending the rear diff breather.

One explains Toyota's use of BMPT or British Standard Pipe Taper, in this case a 1/8 X 28 thread, as opposed to a National Pipe Taper (NPT) 1/8 X 27 thread fitting. Not being a gear head, I incorrectly assumed metric was metric. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hXqzJJtKW7A

The second attachment shows clear instructions in picture format for relocating to the bed storage compartment. http://diymodifiedtacoma.com/differential-breather-relocation

Finally, the third attachment is a great vidio for relocating the breather behind the rear taillight assembly. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Odw0yvBhSPo

    Hope this helps. Cheers,
    Jules

So I picked up a Breather Connector tube, Nissan part 38323-C601A (BSPT 1/8 X 28) to replace the current rear diff breather. I'll attach hose and hose clamps and drill some holes in my new truck. (Ouch - the first cut is the deepest.) Finally, I'll put the original breather in the tail light assembly.

    Cheers

I'm looking to extend the breather into the storage compartment in the bed. The "breather" thats on the diff now is really a vent, it just vents air out. I'd like to put a real breather on the end of the hose something that lets air both in and out to prevent a vacuum from drawing air in through the axle seals, but I don't want to leave an open hose that could let in dust or moisture. And I don't want to pay $70 for the ARB breather kit. What are people using for a true breather? Maybe a fuel filter?

According to WheeliePete at minute 3:34, any type of fuel filter or fish tank stone filter with a barb mount. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hXqzJJtKW7A

My understanding that the vents are extended to the front passenger side wheel well, near the air intake. I'm going to leave that for now. My chances of going into water that deep are pretty low.

On my first gen the two breathers are for tye front diff, and actuator, will most likely be different than yours, but just something to ask about :) if you get that deep in water
