Also just realized I've owned a lot of 2002 things
Lol good one... I'm talking about why the throttle is so unresponsive or why it cuts out before wheels even spin. Then you just roll out into traffic. Whether it is traction control or not no vehicle I have ever had has acted this way normally you get wheel spin the light flashes and it smoothly corrects it. This just says na f you you get nothing.

I hate the throttle response when trying to accelerate on the fly, but I've had some fair share of fun moments. Like when I'm trying to turn and merge with the traffic, the guy I apparently cut off an 1/8 of a mile before whos barreling down the road thinks he can go around and cut me off, then the accelerator kicks in and he can barely keep up. :D

Yeah I've had this too and it always happens when I'm pulling into traffic or else where.

What is really sketchy is it seems to pull forward really slowly at first so that your halfway into traffic then it'll punch it and chirp the tires.

I really don't like it. I do a brake stand now if I have to pull out quickly and that seems to help.

oh I have had a few of those oh shit moments too!!! I was slowing to a stop and then went to pull out before cars came and I never completely stopped and then hit the gas to go and it felt like the pedal went down at least half way or more down before it even started to move and it was a good couple seconds before it took off,you wonder when it does that if you will get hit from behind or something.i have never had that happen in my 2012 Tacoma.

It's the engine management at lower RPM's combined with lack of low end torque.

I had it happen when I was rounding a turn to get into a driveway, in 2nd at ~10 mph.

I turned across on coming traffic, stepped on the gas and literally no response for what felt like a good couple of seconds. I found several moments like this where you need to accelerate quickly turning into traffic where there is a higher speed blind curve not too far behind.

I think someone actually chimed in and told me i didn't know how to drive manual transmissions, that I should have downshifted to 1st (at 10 mph) to complete a turn into a driveway.

My other two manual transmission vehicles must be unicorns because I've never had an issue like that in them, nor do any of my friends with their drive by wire manual trans vehicles.

Downshifting to first at 10mph works great :rofl:
I don't think I ever once downshifted to first gear unless I was hardly rolling and coming to a stop anyway... I would have to slow down considerably to get into my driveway as it is steep and my car was so low, but I was still in second.

Never had this issue, this must be so much more frustrating with a stick shift. I feel like it would be a lot rougher after power was given back, or could potentially stall halfway into traffic if the clutch is fully released and the computer pulls all the engine power?

I ended up eliminating this issue mostly with a Sprint Booster V3. I got a thread somewhere here on the forum with more info. I should update it now that I have been using it for about a month.

Pisses me off. So many Tacoma owners experience this and it is dangerous and Toyota IS aware but is unlikely to do much until it is PROVEN to be a safety issue... via real world accidents that are avoidable.

Be careful folks... OVTune has helped me considerably in being able to confidently merge into traffic and turn against it without fear of hesitation. Should you have to buy something to make your truck safe. No but alas here we are

So the puzzler.. OP states "engine revs but truck won't go" so not a MT. Others complain about throttle response as an issue, but OP said engine RPM increased. My guess is the OP's complaint is transmission related, like was between gears and didn't know which way to go, up or down.
As I was writing this I remembered the "dead throttle" thing happened to me one time shortly after I got the truck. Had maybe 200 miles on it. I blamed my big feet and boots thinking somehow my boot covered both the gas and brake peddle at the same time. Lifted my right foot, hit the gas and off I went. Never happened again so didn't think anything about it till now. Have about 12k on it and no issues since. 2.7 MT.

Sounds like your tranny fluid is low... this happened to me in a mall parking lot while making an agressive tight turn.... The fluid shifted and caused the delay..!! I checked the tranny fluid (myself) and is WAS 3/4 liter low.. Never happened again...

These truck come from the factory with low fluids...!!

Check it your self...!! Do not believe the dealer's dumb-ass computer check... a physical check MUST be made..!

Toyota hacked all the automatics so that way y'all get rear ended when pulling out into traffic, and then they blame the diff recall symptoms on something/someone else.

Yep, mine does the same thing on occasion. Usually going left for whatever reason. Definitely a delay that isn’t present on anything else I’ve owned. 2009 Tundra was an auto and drive by wire, didn’t hesitate to break the tires loose either.

I think the best auto I own is actually my 2002 Camaro SS. It’s a mere 4 speed but is very predictable and instantly responsive. Thump it down hard and turn and you’ll be facing the other way with no delay. It’ll pull straight up mountains in OD too.

Definitely a 2016+ Tacoma issue for me.

Not just a toyota thing. Haven't had it happen to me in the truck yet, but had a BMW 328i (same deal, drive by wire accelerator) that did it to me twice. Same scenario....traffic coming at a pretty good clip, go to pull out into traffic, push the pedal, and the car would just creep forward enough to put me right in the lane of traffic. Two or three second delay, pedal down, and then the thing took off like a bat outta hell. Scary shit. Learned my lesson. I don't need to get anywhere that bad that causes me to trust an electronic accelerator anymore to pull me out in front of traffic.
