Hey everyone. I'll be getting some bilstein 5100 on factory coils up front and 5125 rear on tsb springs and the tire shopping has begun. I've narrowed it down to four tire options.

    falken wildpeak mt - $185
    Goodyear wrangler duratrac - $177
    Toyo open country rt -$229
Cooper discoverer stt pro - $238

Im looking for some details on them such at wear patterns and life. Performance and experiences with them. I currently have the original falken wildpeak AT and I love them! They handle great and balance well. They've got perfect wear with zero cupping/feathering. And I'm blown away by the performance of these off road. The only thing that I didn't care for was their true size measurement. They are 265 70 r16 and that calculation wise should be a 30.6" but they measure a true 29.5" brand new and currently at 29"-29.25" after about 25000 miles. I know the 265 75 r 16 calculates to be a 31.6". So what I'm looking for is people who have the tires mentioned in the 265 75 r16 size to get details on....

    1. true size measurement
    2. wear pattern (cupping/feathering), 3.performance off road and on. We get all sorts of weather in Texas so any details on rain ice and snow would be appreciated as we can literally get any and all of that in a season hahaha
    4. how well do they balance? I'm not super worried about road noise as I know these are aggressive tires and with that will have some heavy noise.

I'm looking for something more aggressive to push the limits of my truck and feel the less aggressive stuff won't cut it. Again loved my falken wildpeak AT. Wish they had done a more aggressive looking AT3. Price is a small factor as I'm willing to pay for a tire that performs well and will meet my expectations.

    With 265 75 r 16, you might want to consider General grabber X3's (I have the C-range).
They're true to size, were a breeze for the shop to balance, very little tire noise, and with about 8-9k miles on them, perfect wear.

I'm trying to upgrade my tires on a 2001 to a more aggressive look. I will be honest I like the look but don't want to loose MPG and create more noise. I do some snow driving as part of getting to my fire department job and occasional over the hills and through the woods stuff at the farm. The shop recommended the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac and the Nitto Trail Grappler M/T. Help

Yeah lots of recommendations for the duratrac and Chevy puts it on their new zr2 from factory. It's a front runner so far. But now added the possibility of a 285. Going to get the cmc done before tires and see what other trimming I can do first. Then maybe find a cheap 285 on Craigslist to see what other trimming may need done.

Since you won't include Hankook (Dynapros ATM or MT) in your poll, let me suggest from the brands you named Toyo Open Country AT or Cooper Discoverer AT_ models, but NOT the STT (noisy as all get out and terrible if you ever drive in sand).

Unless you only use your truck off road, most mud or rock terrain only tires are very noisy on the highway and lower the gas mileage. If you are like a lot of us, we drive our trucks daily then have fun with them on weekends and vacations. The All Terrain tires do fine in mud or rocks because our Off Road TRD Tacomas have such great traction... and you can easily drop the air pressure for better traction. Yours is an '08, so you at least have the locker.

You're right I definitely use the truck as a daily and then off road it in the weekend or trips. But the off roading I do definitely pushes the limits of the truck and the AT tires. There has been a couple trails/obstacles I couldn't make due to poor tire traction. That's why I'm kind of leaning towards the duratrac or toyo rt. Im thinking the other two are just a bit too much tire than what I need for now.

Mostly on road, I would suggest the Dynapro's. Duratracs are nice but they can get heavy depending on size and load. They are also noisy.

I got my set of BF Goodrich T/A KO2 in that size with installation, tax, and lifetime rotate & balance for $813 out the door. I've had 2 sets of KOs before and I love them. The new version has a nice aggressive look too.

To answer your questions about these tires you didn't ask about:
    1. true size: not sure
    2. wear pattern: I keep them rotated and they wear very evenly to the end. And they last a long time, especially for a M/S tire
    3. performance off road and on: sunny days & freeways are great, smooth and very low tire noise. Dirt, mud, and snow all get exceptional traction.
    4. how well do they balance? Very well. Of all the miles I've put on the 3 sets over the last decade I've only had 1 balance problem, and that was cause the dude at the tire shop didn't do it right. I went back and they fixed it. Again, low road noise - like you say, it's not a must but is a nice plus.

This is how I got the deal:

I was considering Duratracs for the step up in aggressiveness and capability but heard from too many people that they don't wear well and get cupped and very loud.

I think the biggest reason I didn't consider them was price point. I feel like I saw them for over 200 somewhere. But that's not a bad price on there. These may be in the mix now. Damn. So many freaking options and everyone loves what they got! Guess there really isn't a bad choice of the name brand stuff

I've found with tires you generally do get what you pay for.

Yeah I worked for lexus as a mechanic for 3 years so I definitely agree with that statement. That's why I want to avoid the hankook and nankang type stuff

Get Cooper Discoverers, but get the ST Maxx. Great off road tire but very quiet. I won a bet with my dad that they were quieter than his Yokohamas. Very aggressive and unique pattern too.

Between Duratracs, ST Maxx, and K02's, Duratracs where the lightest at 45lbs for the C load, even E load comes in at 51 lbs. 54 for both ST Maxx and K02's as they only come in E-load.

I've had the Duratracs in both 265/75R16 C load and 285/70R17 E load and I can definitely feel the the difference in both but mostly acceleration. As far as MPG, around 15 mixed with the bigger and heavier tire size vs 17 mixed with 265. Straight hwy, best I can do with 285's is 20mpg and with 265's, I can get up to 23 hwy.

My biggest issue with 285's is that it sets off my VSC all the damn time.

Really appreciate the info! My mpg blows. Im currently stock at 265 70 16 and only see average 17 combined and best I've ever gotten was about 22-23 going down to south Texas doing about 55-60mph following my parents when they were towing their 12k lbs camper cause that was the fastest they can safely go.
