Hello guys, it's my first post so sorry for anything being incorrect.
I currently have a 2004 Tacoma with the v4. I want it to be loud but was told if I just put a flowmaster it would sound like a Ricer Honda Civic. I was also told to straight pipe with 2" piping to make it sound aggressive.
I want a nice loud aggresive sound is there anyway to do this with the v4 engine?

    FYI It's an I4, not V.
Run a short Magnaflow(13-14") with a turn down at the axle. Sounded good on my old '03

To some people it may sound bad, while to others it sounds good. It's all personal preference.

And what @RelentlessFab fab said. It's an inline 4, meaning all 4 cylinders are in a straight line (hence I4). A V8 gets the name because there are 4 cylinders on each side, and the engine makes the shape of a V. Not busting your balls, merely educating (I also didn't know the difference when I was younger)

Thank you for educating me on the I4, was not aware of that.

The only thing you do with the I4 is remove it and install something else. IMO it's pointless to try and "upgrade" this engine. It will always be asthmatic and there's no point in making it sound like a UPS truck.

Always nice to learn, right ?
Anyway I would listen to Relentless as there suggestion sounds like the best advice offered for what you asked.
Don't pay attention to the motor swappers.

Disagree. 3RZ is a great little engine with a lot of potential.
How about this 3rz powered Ultra 4 rig pushing 500HP

UPS trucks have 5.7 small block Chevy motors anyway.

Sounding like a UPS truck is a bad thing, but SBC swaps are flies to shit?

    Fucking TW.

Incorrect. That 4cyl will be around when the world ends, practically bulletproof.

OP, would recommend you search for some audio clips of the 4cyl (easy) and perhaps jump into others' that have done it (harder). This is the first vehicle I've actually NOT modified the exhaust as I'm happy with the 6cyl. I put a chrome TRD tip on it and some new plumbing and done.

I'd also recommend Magnaflow as IMO they give the best tone without the drone (see what I did there).

Good luck and post some pics.

There are posts with the sounds of different exhaust systems somewhere in these Gen-I forums. Yes, some FlowMasters do sound rice-rockety, but there are other FlowMasters that do our trucks good justice.

It's a 4cyl. It won't sound (or be) aggressive no matter what muffler you put on it, assuming you don't go with a full race motor, lol...

In all honesty, you can get [insert pretty much any muffler here] and it definitely will change the sound, but it will sound exactly like what it is; an unmodified 4cyl motor with a muffler trying to sound "aggressive" - i.e. a fart can.

If all you care about is what sound it makes, by all means look through the threads with videos of the various mufflers (keep in mind video rarely captures the actual sound - best to hear it in person), but if you would rather get a bit of performance out of that little 4 banger, look to other modifications and worry less about the sound it makes.

But I'm a function-over-form type guy, so that's what you're going to hear form me.

But that's just like, my opinion, man...

@Speedytech7 has a good sounding 4 banger. He has headers too.
