    @MoneyMan55
This is what I am working with. Like I said I asked a few Sparky types and was told no you can't do what you want and then they went on to price quote some really high numbers well high in my opinion.
The main box you see the heavy black wire to the left that feeds the other shop small panel. My thought was put a feed outlet for the gennie in the fenced yard side of the the other shop run wire into a dual position switch in position 1 all is normal feed from big panel feeds small panel. Throw switch small panel goes dead and use the heavy wire already run to feed power to another dual position switch under a sub panel next to the big panel . that switch controls power from the big panel going to the little panel in the other shop. position 1 all is normal position 2 the feed goes to the small sub panel to run water pump and a few outlets etc .
So power goes out I switch off power from street switch the feed to the sub panel then go to the other shop flip the switch from its sub panel to feed the one next to the big panel. Fire up gennie plug in and go . I think I described it right . I do not want to back feed the big panel just trying to save running another big cable between the garages.

    Evening all.
    Long day.
    Boat charging for the am.
    Did two more chapters.
    Two to go.
Still a lot of bullcrap but it is what it is.
Had a hunter come out behind my house.
He looked a little off course.
I was outside and comes up beside the house and I spot him.
Ok now how is this gonna play out.
He says sorry for cutting through.
I said you missed by 100 yards.
Should have turned right at the pit and over the mound.
So I asked if he saw anything.
No he said but there are a few cameras out there.
I go yea their mine.... (Well my boys lol )
And your standing at my 40 yard stick for my range.
He looks back and said oh no...
I said you didn't take a leak in front of one did ya?
I really don't need to see that.
No and I will make sure I don't come this way again.
I said that's fine. No problem. You just might walk up on me that's all.
So we talked a little and he realized I wasn't mad at him.

So that was a little interesting change tonight.

Yeah umm if you saw the mistake I made building a cart to hold water bottles you would laugh , I think I have a picture if not I can get one Monday as I built it for my new post since one of the other guys bought an water cooler and ice maker for 200 bucks. I tried to be slick and if I had recalled which way the case was orientated when I started installing the shelves yeah it would have been slick... I did not until I flipped the case back upright ... Ahh huh lol Did I mention I like METAL !! lol simple cut and reweld grind off old weld paint no one would ever know lol.

I have not had to replace anything yet but I do not use it a lot I go through spats where I have to do wood working for a project but then it sets for a long while. I have everything needed to do wood stuff just because I needed it one time or another for a project air nailers, router, chop saw , edge jointer etc etc . Want a bigger laugh I had to separate my bits and countersinks as I grabbed the wrong ones a few times never the drill bits but the countersinks yep lol

@Ret CB don't have a picture on my phone. I will get one Monday all it is ,is a case divided into 6 cubbies to fit 5 gallon water bottles front to back and 3 gallon ones side ways.. Which is where the screw up is, I flipped the case over to attach it to the furniture dolly I used for a mobile case, I had planned on tilting the shelves to the back 1/4 inch so when the 3 gallons were put in sideways they would not roll out. Yep with the case upside down I did the measurements and started attaching the shelves lol. Soooooo you can see the problem at the top the tip goes from back to front not front to back sigh.....

Oh I understand. Not ragging man.
    But food for thought.
I don't understand your reasoning for not feeding the main panel. Everything runs through that.
You don't have to run stuff if you don't want to. No extra switches or pulling levers to swap boxes.
Mine runs like normal on gen. The only thing is if you run electric appliances you don't run the range.
Just shut off that breaker if you might forget.

Most of the jolts were just me doing silly stuff like swapping a wire with out dropping power .. come on it is DC right lol yeah it still hurts . The 120 was years ago thank you to whom ever marked the breakers WRONG !!! and stupid me for believing the marking. The 208 yeah again years ago like 30 plus years ago when I used to install HVAC and the Sparky's almost always wired the squirrel cage backward in a 20 ton unit on the roof. Again me being stupid just got to move a wire be careful and done and don't have to go back down 3 flights of stairs to find a breaker and turn it off . Learned my lesson !!

I did fix it but not by moving the shelves just took the cart off put a piece of luan in the front and the shelves are now level but the edge of the case at the top shows the error lol and I was not brave enough with the Milwaukee to cut from nothing to something to make it look right.
