So after looking through the first 26 pages I gave up. I could have sworn I saw a post a while ago that said Moble-1 Synthetic LS would be fine for the trucks (mine included) that didnt need the LSD additive. I believe last time I did this I just used the Moble-1 Synthetic LS for front, rear, and xfer case. Does this sound right?

I think I found the answer back on page 30. The LS just means its safe for use on Limited Slip (I hope)

did you use any addition additives or anything else? did you use the same for the front diff and transfer case too?

 

FWIW I used the Mobile 1 75-90 LS on my 06 SR5 with open diff and had a ton of chatter. I just added the LSD Additive (what ever O'Reilys had on shelf) and it is gone now.

Will this oil be good for all three applications on my truck?

 

Yes. IMO those are good choices and probably what I will use when the time comes.

 

Did some maintenance at 23,323 miles.

Changed my rear differential, front differential, and transfer case oil to Mobil 1

$29 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90. Front and rear diff oil was very black with very minor/thin shavings on the magnets.

Transfer case oil was honey-colored (expected).

Also changed my air filter and cabin filter.

Summary: change your differential oils earlier than the recommended 30,000 miles.

Check out the DIYs on here by @chris4x4, @brianr and @boogie3478 to save yourself hundreds of dollars (close to $1,000 for all 3 services).

The dark oils smell like death.

Thank you everyone here on Tacomaworld. Changed fluid for both differentials and transfer case today using mobile one synthetic with 32k miles on truck. Easy process with the excellent writes up.

 

Prepping to do this service this week. Hoping I don't get leaks since I'm going to use Mobil 1 Synthetic.

You don't need additive. 2005-2008 TRD Sports need additive.

 

How do I know if there's synthetic in there or not?...does that even really matter if I'm going to change it?

Is the rear diff supposed to overflow? Just curious as to I have read by some the rear diff will overflow at 3 quarts...I don't believe mine did.

 

I would try and stay away for synthetic in the rear, after reading this thread that is what I understand.
You have a 2006 right? Are you an off-road or sport??
Sports have a LSD diff.
LSD additive is for the limited slip diff, there should be a sticker on your rear differential.

 

I got under there the other day and didn't see any sticker, I wasn't looking for one, but didn't see one... I'll look again tomorrow when the sun's up... I honestly have no idea, I don't think it's a sport, the guy who had it before me took all branding off the truck. I'm pretty sure it's a TRD but no way to tell... that I know of...

 

If it's a sport you'd have a skewp
Color matched bumpers, door handles and grill.
Off road has a rear locker, chrome bumpers and grill.
