Replacement back-up camera

Alright tacoma world I need some help. I just broke the backup camera. Can I get any cheap Amazon replacement and just splice it Into the exisiting four pin connector? I have it mounted on my swingout so it can be any camera I just want to reuse the existing wiring. Is this more complicated than I think? Any sugestions on cameras? I have the version where it displays in rearview mirror.

 

IIRC the oem camera is 6v, aftermarket will be 12v. But the coax output should be the same. Don't know if that helps.

 

Sounds like I might have to run separate power for camera but should should be able to splice into stock video input wires.

 

What i really need is if anyone has the wiring diagram for the camera so I know which wire does what I can't find it.

 

Found what i needed. so now i just need to find a 6v camera...

 

Or you could run the 6v input into a relay that sends a 12v output to your new camera. In case you can't locate the proper 6v camera...

 

yea it seems like OEM is the only viable option for a 6v camera and it is still way cheaper to buy a 6v to 12v converter and camera then just a 6 volt camera.

 

Those cheap ass license plate mounted cameras are garbage anyways. Make sure you buy one with the proper orientation so it transmits the way you want. Some have a wire you can cut to reverse the image if being used as a backup. I bought a tiny ~5/8" camera and drilled a hole into my bumper for it that worked pretty well. I could see the hitch ball from it so it was perfect.

 

Maybe it will work with just bypassing the power from the harness and using a 12v lead from the reverse light to new camera?

 

i was thinking about that too, but for 13 bucks im tempted to just not mess with pulling the light and cutting more wires.

Just remember that $13 piece of fine Chinese engineering might not be as reliable as you were hoping. Not a major deal if/when it fails, but...

 

Agreed, but i don't see that piece as a complicated piece of hardware especially if i add some silicone to it like i do with most cheap electronic items i put out in the elements. guess the only way is to find out.

 

I'd definitely be interested in seeing your final setup. My oem camera also failed and I have an aftermarket in a separate location. Ideally I want to fix up the original location with a new setup.

 

yea i have it a bit easier since i cant put it in the tailgate handle anymore due to my tire carrier so im not limited by OEM camera.

 

ok. so i bought a camera that had a four pin connector, but when i cut it off it only had three wires... I'm assuming positive negative and a trigger wire?? ill attach some pictures and see if you electrical gurus could help figure out witch wires go where.

Yellow is video out I'd say. Yellow is the standard color for video on pretty much all electronic devices

 

Yea i agree but i dont know which pin it goes to on the truck harness.

My guess is:

Yellow -> CB+
Red -> CV+
Black -> CV- and CGND

 

Red is cb+, black cgnd, yellow cv+. Don't worry about cv-. That connection was most likely broken to avoid ground loops.
B+ is positive 12 volts. Cgnd is ground
