Has anyone replaced their oem steering rack bolts with grade 8 or 10 bolts? If so what size do you use?

I'm going to be putting these bushings in this weekend and was wondering if anybody knows if there's something similar to an expanding concrete anchor/ wall anchor that I could connect to a slide hammer to remove the old bushings? Or is a pickle fork/ball joint separator the only way? Also will this one from harbor freight work: ?

Harbor freight one should be fine. I would imagine a slide hammer might make it a bit more difficult. I've been putting doing mine off. Let us know how it goes haha.

Will do, hopefully I can complete my work this weekend and doesn't take me a week, I'm going to replace lower control arms, sway bar bushings struts, rotors, pads, shoes, and rear shocks as well. Maybe upper ball joints if they look bad.

I just used a crappy chisel and hammer to get under the lip. Then used a pickle fork to get it the rest of the way out. Mine were super easy to get out, but my truck is also 9 years newer than yours. Good luck and feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Wow did this on my previous Sequoia a few years ago and it was cake but it had enough room to get a BJ press in there to press the main vertical bushing out
the Tacoma looks like a PITA ? :(

I used an air chisel. Mine were well seated and took some persuasion to come out.

Pickle fork was a key point in this thread for me... hit them with a pry-bar/BFH, air chisel they weren't budging... as soon as I got online and saw this thread recommend a pickle fork I got it out and had the stock bushings out in about a minute.

I've got one of those that attaches to my air hammer, but it was too thick to get it started under the lip.

Yea, need to use a flathead, or chisel to get the lip high enough to fit pickle fork in there.

Thanks for the info on this one guys, very handy. 2 notes on my install - I am a moron and didnt notice the very bottom lip of the old bushing, so I basically pickle forked them in half to start! Yikes. Also wheelers sent me NO CANDY aw geez.

I'd file a chargeback with your credit card company. That's unacceptable. :pccoffee:

I attempted this last week on my 07 and didn't get very far at all. Couldn't get the down rod/shaft to separate. The first 12mm bolt I managed to get out but that's it... seems the bolt pinches the down shaft on the splines on the rack connection... the connection didn't care at all that I took out the bolt and there was no up or down play in the down shaft at all... not sure how one is supposed to get that off. Steering wheel locked btw.
    Any tips???
There some rust to contend with...
And even if I clear this hurdle I have serious doubts about the pressure and return line bolts. Can't even get an open ended wrench on there... Trying to avoid buying a whole new rack, pump and lines...
