I've had a thought go through my mind, i have a 2010 access cab with almost 140k miles with some nice extras. I was thinking that maybe since I'm going to lineman school and it's going to be 20k out of pocket, also owe about 7k on my truck still, that I would sell my truck and get maybe a 1st gen or an older second gen with lower miles or close to same and maybe make some money and pay off my loan. That way I don't worry about a truck payment and just a school one. I could also be more comfortable with my money while at school. Have any of you done this? Or what's your thoughts...

Tough one. You're pretty close to having it paid off.

I know I'm not to far away, the only thing is if I wasn't paying so much for school I would try to pay all of it off in next year or two instead of 3 or 4

With the oil downturn I'm going to welding school. My dealer just happen to get in a high mileage 09 4x4 sr5. Traded my 16 that had zero equity and got this one for 13,500. 235,000 miles owned by an old couple that took good care of it. I set my payment out pretty far so I'm only having to pay $250 a month. But I'll hit it hard after I get my biz going and keep it as a toy.

What you have to keep in mind is the repaires that will need done. I immediately had to put a new battery in. I've put 15,000 on it and need to do the u joints and carrier bearing. Im happy I did it, also I drive 160 miles a day if yours is just a commuter an older one will probably be fine.

I actually set out to get a first gen and they all sold before I could even reply to the add. I see a lot of them running around. For a DD in town I wouldn't hesitate to get one.

Hmmmmm, yeah I would honestly get one with same or less miles and it won't be wheeled hard and won't even be driven much at school but could save me anywhere from 4 to like 10k on what I can sell my truck for

You should be able to sell your truck and pay cash for a 1st gen and have some left over.

More than likely I will be keeping it, and just try to save as much money as possible and get on with PG&E very quickly!

Also another thing to add on, if I were to sell my truck and still have say 3k left on the payment, I would still pay the bank off as if I still had the truck right? Or does something have to happen?

you aint gonna find a clean 1st gen with at or lower miles for cheap. Not gonna happen, not even close. Keep your truck.

The only reason I thought of this was becuase I did see some 1st gens that were less than 15k less than 85k miles and in good condition on a first gen find thread...

You still have to pay off your loan...selling your vehicle to a third party doesn't change that.

with 1st gens its. low Price / low miles / no rust .... pick 2.

You MIGHT make 5k on the deal... aint worth it to downgrade in size to a 1st gen and deal with the hassle IMO.

Hmmmm that's a pretty good point... it's more than likely I will keep my second gen as I know it's a nice truck and if treated right like I do it will last long and maybe save me more money in the long run

And don't forget the transaction costs. Even if you find a nice 1st gen for say $12k, you're throwing $1000 down the drain at taxes, registration, etc.
