I agree I had a good time. It would be nice to maybe have a mod day sometime as well

 

Lets plan it out in the next few weeks! I like the idea of getting some tools and meeting up at a spot with food and stuff. I don't have any current projects myself besides creating an RTT rack, but I can always help wrench!

 

Good to finally meet you guys man! Hope to do it again and make it a mod/wheel/camp/ drink beers kinda meet. Also thanks for the bracket it fit perfect.

 

If I had known I would've joined! Wife was out of town so it was a Tacoma filled weekend for me.

Have you heard of the floor jack method? Sandwich the drill between a floor jack and the frame and use it to slowly press the drill into the frame. That paired with step bits and it'll go through like butter.

 

I have had to drill in my frame a few times...it seems no matter what bits you use it takes a little while if you want them to last for all the holes. I do agree the floor jack idea can certainly help with holding it though. I normally use three drill bits to step up the hole.

 

I did it in my last truck for the All pro sliders. With the jack/step bit, each hole took about 30-45 seconds. I was pleasantly surprised.

 

What bits did you use? I assume the bottom of the frame right? I had to drill holes for the bottom of my frame for support holes for sliders. I did one side with my bits, and the other side at Mobtowns garage. Both took an hour or two to complete, but that is also a lot of metal to drill through.

 

I don't remember the brand (I think husky?) but each bit coast $20 and I had to use two, and that was to drill 8 holes. I used WD40 as a cutting oil since that's all I had on hand. I tried originally with a regular bit, but was getting nowhere. As soon as I switched to a step bit, it flew through the frame. It was the really long skinny kind.

 

Def interesting to note, I will have to keep this in mind when I do my rear end prep. Not a bad idea on the WD40 for a cutting oil substitute.

 

Also take this with a grain of salt as this was a little over a year ago and my memory isn't the greatest. 30-45 seconds may be a little exaggerated, but it definitely wasn't longer than a few minutes per hole.

 

Sounds good, I hear getting out rivets on our frames are a bitch even with an air hammer. Depending on my schedule, I might just have a shop do that though.

 

I've heard that's a bitch as well. If I were to attack it, I'd use an angle grinder to try and notch or cut the head off and then hammer it out. It'd be a hell of a lot easier with a plasma or blow torch or whatever the proper tool is.

 

Yea that is the approach I have heard as well with grinding off the heads and then air hammering out. I do wonder with a shop's array of tools if they could knock it out in relatively short time due to what they likely have in their arsenal. Who knows though...still got to get all the parts first.

 

air hammer is still a pita to deal with, best is to angle one side out and drill it out, or run a plasma


tho the air hammer is good for the pinch welds

 

Im hoping that shop that I am considering has a plasma. I would think with the jobs that they do that they would. Regardless, its not something I am remotely looking forward to.

 

its not something i want to do ever again, i helped somone take out the rear shackle point and the bump plates to install air stops and both times were still a pain.
