It's pretty cheap. You can get a 50lb bag around here for like 8-10 bucks. We have it to feed our ducks. (Well a duck, the neighbors dog has had some fun this summer).

We keep it in a heavy Rubbermaid trash can. Last summer the squirrels figured out that's where the corn was, and they started chewing a hole through the handle on the lid, and it's really heavy plastic. I had to put some aluminum over it, so they wouldn't keep making the hole bigger.

You'll want to keep it outside somewhere, we used to keep it in the trash can, in our garage. A couple of summers ago all the cracked corn around here had a bad case of Weevils. They got in our house, Weevils aren't cool. So we keep it outside now.

Just put a handful on a butter container etc lid, and put it in a box trap. That's how we catch them all the time. Or if I'm outside with my 12 gauge, I just blow them up. We sometimes clean them and throw them in the freezer, but really only eat them a couple times a year.

No pets, but curious 5yo and 2yo daughters that are faster than me... I considered that or leaving some rat poison in peanut butter, but I'm afraid the kids might find it.

They aren't getting left unattended, but there are 2 of them and you can't watch every single thing they do. The other side of the fence isn't really an option. Just don't want to risk them finding it the 2 seconds I'm not looking.

For that reason, I'll be sticking with non-poison options for now.

I don't know if that would work on squirrels, but that's pretty funny.

Actually you are incorrect, we've caught 4 of them this year with a trap underneath our peach tree. They were getting our peaches at night, I've come home from 3-11's and caught them in the peach tree and they are always in the garden. So which part of my statement was incorrect, my friend?

Edit: I've had gardens and grown things all my life, I can tell you for a fact a possum will eat things in the garden.

Easy there bub. I was just going by the article. I dont have a garden or a "peach" tree, however I do have a rather large mango tree and avocado tree have never had an issue with opossums eating either of them, however the fucking squirrels do. Maybe you have a rogue opossum problem :notsure:

Either way, no need get so BH about being told you may or may not be correct. I believe thats why they call these things "discussions"

Edit: Btw where was the trap? On the ground or in the tree?

No worries. The trap was on the ground. They get in our trees every year, but the squirrels are worst. The possum will eat the fruit on the tree, and on the ground if there's any, and the squirrel will run off with it, usually bury it, and forget about it. We had one rip the crawl out of one of the ducks we had, just to eat the corn, it didn't harm the bird otherwise.

Don't believe every article you read online, there's a lot of misinformation online. A lot of country-wanna-be-urban-hippies that like to think they know everything about gardening and which animals are bad etc. Usually to justify not harming animals.(I'm not for harming animals at all, unless they become a problem) :).

Rarely do I dispatch squirrels, possums or the occasional raccoon. But if they need to chew on my window trim, make crawl under my deck multiple time to chase the out, then they are taken out with this.IMG_0136.jpg

Had a girl friend that like to grow tomatoes in the deck's flower boxes. Saw her drop kick a slow possum off the deck. Sucker flew about 20', got up and just waddled off like it didn't care. The deer around here are more of a pest. If it blooms, they'll eat it. Again, they're cool to have around, so they get a pass

I didn't read the whole thread but if you wrap the pecan tree and any trees close by in sheet metal for 5 or 6 feet they won't be able to climb it

That's what my neighbor had done to his and it works.

All well and good if there are no close trees, but squirrels can jump.

That's a big part of the problem, my neighborhood basically has a canopy of live oak, pecan and mulberry trees. They can go the length of the block without touching the ground pretty much. May have to get the squirrel flinger for entertainment... that's hilarious.
