No downside at all. I use mine frequently but when it's not the default mode and that default mode leaves so much to be desired, you're reminded of what's lacking. However, now having OVTune installed, D is much much better, but ECT feels extremely peppy and I want that feeling all the time without having to think about engaging it.

To be honest with you I never really even considered using an arduino on a vehicle before reading this post, not only do I see this as an extremely ingenious solution to a seemingly simple problem; but utilizing an arduino while piggy backing off of an OEM connector seems like a very convenient way to do a lot of things.

Imagine a PCM connection done in a similar way, almost endless customization using whatever combination of button presses you like to achieve a function that otherwise you wouldn't utilize. I would like to see the day where I can enter a cheat code using my steering wheel d-pad and activate a performance tune, turn off traction control, turn on my underglow, and play turbo spool and nitrous sounds through my stereo at max volume. A guy can dream...

New Tacoma owner. I didn't use my ECT until I read this thread, and now I hardly drive without it!
Also interested in the inline mod when you get it going.

Someone pls break it down for me in simple terms..

What does ECT do or change to the truck to make it faster? I'm sure it's been answered in this thread but for newcomers like me pls advise. And further why did toyota not make it the stock tune? Wear and tear?

And yeah, agreed... the truck feels turbocharged with that button pushed :)

ECT improves throttle response, holds gears longs, and gives the truck a little more "pep".
I THINK it was disabled on purpose to meet EPA regulations. But just a theory.
Doubt any more "wear and tear" otherwise toyota wouldn't have made the button

The Toyota explanation of the ECT is it changes just the shift patterns. I have been driving with the ECT on for 3 weeks (2 with the old splice in mod). I have noticed better throttle response and lower gas mileage on short trips (10-13 MPG). My highway mileage is great (20+ MPG). Also wheeling is more responsive. I got 16 MPG for the hour at Box Canyon< I usuall get 11 (I was rafing on it)

I suspect that the ECU is changing fuel, and other items in the engine to make it more responsive. I even suspect that the Atkinson-cycle is curtailed. I have no proof except at low RPM's I feel more power. Also, at idle, I think I'm pulling in more gas. I feel that these items cannot be explained just through changing shift points.

I also have heard that 6th gear is not used as much.

My thoughts on this is give me the ECT power at while driving and a and Atkinson cycling at idle and low RPM. We need a reprogram that incorporates the throttle, gear box and the tech to give us the best of both worlds.

I'm sorry Toyota. I'm not seeing the dramatic decrease in fuel economy with my ECT on...I would say I get better MPG.

Finally OP, this is a sweet set up now THANKS.

I've said this before. I use mine all the time here in Western NC and ALWAYS get 18-20 mpg. Running 265/70/17's. I turn it on before I put it in reverse in the driveway.

I think it's a misconception that it changes MPG. The temperature or which way the wind is blowing is probably a bigger factor.

But wouldn't it be nice if you didn't have to hit it before backing out the drive way?

Also.... Tactical park that shit man.

Yeah...I read it. Alot of trolls out there. They slammed everything on the post.

Engineer or not. I think there's more going on than shift points. What I like now is the ability to get out on the freeway without the lag.
