I see a lot of people suggesting 4.88 gears for 285's. Isn't that hella overkill for a 3rd gen 4x4 AT?

33" x 3.90 / 31" = 4.10

Seems like 4.56 would be plenty of excess power... but then again, what do I know?

I've usually seen 4.56 suggested for 33's and 4.88 for 35's

@Iamraiderpower many of us came to the conclusion that you dont have to come and hang out at the meets, we just need you to show up and check everyones tab.

Do you plan to pull a trailer or go over a mountain pass?? If so you will appreciate the 4.88s.

I have found that people with a MT they can do the 4.56 gears, but most people with an AT want 4.88s.

I think that @NEWBIETACO can attest to the 4.88s.

for the 3rd gen you can get 4.30's front and rear... but 2nd gen is not that lucky

Its been a few months but last I checked the only option for 3rd Gens is 4.88. One day I'll need/want to regear but don't think I'll ever go 4.88. I'm hoping 4.56 come out for 3rd gens by the time I need it.

 

What's the downside of going too high?

 

Lower top speed and terrible gas mileage for DD, from what I understand

 

Tacoma and good gas milage have never been said in the same sentence, even in stock form.

 

Some people average 20+, which is good gas mileage for a truck.

I was 17.4 avg stock, but now I am more like 15.5 after putting on 275/70/17 Maxx

 

I average 22-24 in my half ton F1shitty, so for a mid size to only pull down 20, thats no wueno por dookie

 

You can get 4.30's... but it will be from toyota and cost an arm/leg/first born as all TRD OR Manual Transmissions come with 4.30s from the factory so you should be able to get them from the service department

 

But... gas grows on trees? Isn't that what the environmentalists are trying to save?

 

or you have to know how to work the system
